It's turned into the Boy Scouts. In my opinion, but it depends on the unit too. It's all paper work can even really yell at people when they messed up anymore either. Been out less then a year.

Got out in 2013, still was called Devil Dog, called other Marines Devil Dogs....that was 4 years ago...so now it's "non gender specific Marine"

I was deployed on the LHA-3 Belleau Wood. That one ship, the entire crew were devil dogs. Even the squids.

There was some stink a couple of years back about referring to how many Marines you had by calling them "bodies," but that was it. DD is still fine, (almost) everyone still says bodies.

Usually only ever heard or used Devil Dog when someone was about to get chewed out.

Heh, haven't heard that name in a while. He was my Company 1st Sgt in boot circa '99. I remember a couple things:
He was loud. Easy to spot from afar.
He instructed us for PFT pullups. During his instruction he probably did 100 pullups and didn't leave the bar. He demonstrated all kinds of different ways they could be accomplished, even one handed. I think he had custom cammies because his biceps were so huge.
He was loud. He stood behind me during the graduation ceremony and practice. I was halfway asleep when he sounded off to report, I thought my socks were going to fall off. Luckily I was never targeted by him. Like my grandpa advised: be invisible.

As far as using the term 'devildogg' - in the remote areas in the airwing there were a few moto- dudes that used it seriously, but a lot of the short-timers mocked it, refused to use any "moto" terms, and would just grumble a low-energy "urrr" or some silly crap like "rah-oo" When we got attached to larger units I heard it used seriously more often.
