Yeah, when you're spending so much time in the front leaning rest position it's hard to notice how easy things are. Back when I went through basic CIB's were scarce but all of our cadre wore EIB's and most had jump wings or air assault wings or both. They treated us like the green turds we were.

Which army basic training to go to?

^^ Most MOS's don't transfer to the civilian world.
Go to combat arms and don't become a "Fobit" or a "POG". What transfers over the best to the civilian world is:
Leadership Skills
Ethics
Teamwork
Teambuilding
Stress management
Etc, the list goes on if you 'tailor' your resume correctly.
Just don't put down "Was operational as Fack and killed tons of Hodjis" and you should be fine.sigpicComment

I think any military service, performed honorably, works well on a resume. Same as a college degree of any major. You demonstrate maturity and the ability to start something and finish it.
I got lucky and picked an MOS in the Army AG Corps. Very high speed operational tempo tip of the spear type stuff when it came to organizing personnel files, making copies, and sorting mail.Comment

Ha, I did BCT at 34, you'll be fine wherever you go, just a little more sore than the kids. I really wouldn't put much thought into this and just go with the ship date that works best for you. Generally the reputations have some merit, but by and large I doubt it's going to be all that different. I went to Jackson- it may have been soft (it wasn't too challenging). From what I've heard from my battles Fort Jackson sounds like it may be a bit more professional, but who knows. Take whatever they give you/whatever is most convenient. There may be a choice, I have orders for ft.benning for basic and ait in ft. Lwood.
If I wanted to ship out sooner then The army could send me to attend basic at any three locations. The reason I ask is,I know it's basic training. But some friends say hell no don't go ft.lwood go to Jackson or benning. Better facilities and Jackson is "more relaxed."
I'm 25 years old and I will throw it out there, if Jackson is more relaxed I'll need it. I ain't no 18 year old. But I'm in shape passed meps and opat test.Comment

After giving your situation careful thought, ask if you can go to all of them, one after another to ensure that you get the best training possible. I would like to hear an opinion of which one was easiest/hardest from a person who ordered the wheel. Not that it makes any difference to me, I went 11 years ago.Comment

My oldest and their friend went to Jackson............... they seemed to have a good time.
More than once while listening to their experiences , I found myself taken aback .... as that's not how I recall boot camp.
I guess recruiters were even making sure to send boyfriend/girlfriend combos there ..... so they wouldn't be apart.???
And a time out card or something if you felt stressed???
Pizza party ... and I mean a real pizza party , not the type of "party" that we used to get...........
When I was there for their graduation .... everyone had their cell phone , granted cell phones weren't invented when I was in boot but there was some strange stuff ................. maybe I'm just old...............but I think I might just pay a little to go for a couple weeks there ..... get away for awhile , know what I meanLast edited by WMG; 01-03-2017, 4:59 PM.If you start thinking like a Free Man

That was my motivation for picking the MOS I did
Nah, I had a preexisting injury/condition with my foot that only the Army was willing to waive. With that said, I still coulda gone 11B if I had wanted it but I figured I was already playing with fire with my foot even in a soft MOS. I was in no rush to land myself in a wheelchair (even if it got me a guaranteed 100% VA claim) so I went 35G. Got a 99 on the ASVAB so I coulda gone with anything but I was too stupid and impatient to wait for something better. Story of my life lolUnless we keep the barbarian virtues, gaining the civilized ones will be of little avail. I went to Sill... it was chill as F***, as in freeze your balls off cause it was the middle of Winter. Followed by 2 tornadoes, baseball sized hail, and heavy enough rain and flooding they closed the post.
Our battery DS cadre when I went through, iirc, was about 3/4 11B.
As weird as it is I liked Ft Sill.
Just embrace the suck and it flies by.Last edited by BlueOvalBandit; 01-06-2017, 10:25 PM.Comment

I went to Ft Knox, spent Christmas of 1976 in the Repple Depple (Replacement Detachment), 2 January I crossed the line into D-18-4 for Basic. If you watch "Stripes", that's the environment. WW2 wood barracks, aka 3-minute miracles, as if they caught fire, it was a miracle if anyone got out after 3 minutes. Open stall ****ters, trench urinal, open showers. One guy refused to shower with the other nekkid guys, drill sergeant shoved him into the shower and we went at him with toilet brushes & scouring powder. Not a problem after that. Cold as hell, lots of snow, PT, road marches on Misery, Agony, and Heartbreak, and ranges, lots of ranges, nonstop ranges. When we went through the gas chamber, the troops were happy to have all their plugged-up sinuses drain for the first time in months. No bivouac with shelter-halves, the ground was so frozen the tentpegs bent. Three month Basic, graduation, then onto a bus for AIT.Active Army 1976-1986, Army Reserve 2005-2015, Afghanistan 2010-2011

Cell phones in basic!!
When I went to Jackson cell phones didn't exist. We had a pay phone in each barracks - but we were forbidden to use them except on Thanksgiving Day. We also were not allowed any newspapers or magazines either. It's hard to believe that anyone is allowed any access to any phone knowing how restricted we were. When I was there for their graduation .... everyone had their cell phone , granted cell phones weren't invented when I was in boot but there was some strange stuff ................. maybe I'm just old...............but I think I might just pay a little to go for a couple weeks there ..... get away for awhile , know what I meanComment

I went through basic at 2011, but I was 39 years old. So my experience was watching the train wreck coming day in and day out and not being able to do anything about it. My concept of "time" was much different. Basic Training wasn't even as long as a fiscal quarter. When I went to Jackson cell phones didn't exist. One brat quit because he couldn't take it (he was sneaking phone calls on his phone, and they were going to give him an Article 15 so he quit), so he was put in the hold over barracks. He was more than happy to remind us about all the BS we had to play as we ran around to Drill SGT's every command and he laughed at us.
His tuned changed when we all dressed up in our Blues on graduation day and got on our separate AIT buses, and his butt was still there.
Stupid little Millennial brats. Play the game, and the world is yours. One kid I went through basic with is now an active duty Staff SGT, and I'm a 1st LT, and we're still inside the timeline if our original enlistment obligation.Last edited by Snoopy47; 01-08-2017, 2:14 PM.Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.Comment

Go to Benning. That way when you fly out you can spend some time in HOT-Lanta.It was not a threat. It was an exaggerated response to an uncompromising stance. I was taught never to make a threat unless you are prepared to carry it out and I am not a fan of carrying anything. Even watching other people carrying things makes me uncomfortable. Mainly because of the possibility they may ask me to help.Comment
