...whether you like Mr. Nichols or not - you really should read the library of cases related to open carry and concealed carry.

Concealed carry of a weapon of any kinds was considered borderline suspicious criminal behavior back in the day - hence why those who were caught carrying concealed - whether they committed a crime or not - were harshly dealt with.

Cases back in the day where a person was being harassed for open carry were routinely thrown out by state courts for constitutional reasons.

Remember, as everyone was clearly reminded in Peruta decision:

            1. You have the right to keep and bear arms.
            2. Only cause necessary is "self defense" - nothing more...
            3. In any mode allowed - you can't discriminate amongst equal law abiding citizens - standards for all - not a select few.

The mode is where folks tend to conflate things and get confused...

Historically, open carry was the mode associated with the right...even here in California.

Historically, concealed carry was the mode considered a privilege - subject to regulatory whims of bureaucrats and politicians....
Derringers were very popular back in the day, even prior to the O/U double-barreled Remington derringer first marketed in 1866. Are you saying all of those derringers, and similar tiny handguns, were either left at home or Openly Carried???

I think we all are in agreement here, the challenge now is how to get the courts to recognize our rights again.
