WTS unreg guns & ammo to out of state buyer
Tags: None -
Newbie re this. A friend in the Midwest might want to buy some guns and ammo from me. The guns in question were never registered because that wasn’t required way back when.
Q: Do I have to register the firearms with CA DON/BoF prior to selling them? If so, how long does that usually take? How much in fees?
Q: Do I have to use a CA FFL to handle my side of the deal and to ship them? If so, how much do CA FFLs usually charge for that?
Q2) not by law, but with the recent change to UPS and Fedex tariffs, pretty much need an FFL to do the shipping.
You also need not file a 'No Longer In Possession' - not required, and demands a lot of info about the buyer who should quite reasonably object to giving that info to CA.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good! -

As to bolded above. LONG guns, rifle/shotgun can be sent USPS. HANDGUNS are a NoNo for post office. But this outfit
Has good references as a 3rd party shipper for reasonable rates.Comment

However...
A CA FFL dealer must be utilized for the transfer to the CA buyer.
If the seller meets the buyer at the CA FFL dealer doing the transfer, then the transfer is considered a PPT and the fees that the CA FFL dealer can legally charge are capped.
If the seller ships the firearm to the CA FFL dealer that is doing the transfer to the CA buyer, then the transfer is not considered a PPT and the CA FFL dealer can legally charge any amount of money to facilitate the transfer.
In addition, in regards to ammunition sales...
The seller in CA is limited to selling 500 rounds of ammunition per 30 days.
^Exemption to this if they are licensed by CA DOJ as an ammunition vendor or they are a CA FFL dealer.Last edited by Quiet; 10-07-2022, 8:17 AM.sigpic

No, no law requires you to use an FFL to ship ammo.
But you may find some issues shipping. USPS calls small arms ammunition 'nonmailable Division 1 explosives' - https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52...=R&p=1&c=Pub52
UPS seems to still accept ammunition - https://www.ups.com/us/en/support/sh...mmunition.pageCartridges, small arms may be shipped only through a UPS Scheduled Pickup Account using various UPS pickup services or through a UPS Customer Center (counters at UPS operational facilities).30342.
(a) Commencing January 1, 2018, a valid ammunition vendor license shall be required for any person, firm, corporation, or other business enterprise to sell more than 500 rounds of ammunition in any 30-day period.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page

So far, the replies have been about the guns.

And then there's CA's 500 rounds per month limit -
Thanks, I have some fairly scarce ammo a friend really needs for a trip.Comment
