    Moving firearms across state lines...

I'm moving out of CA to TX and planning to take most of my firearms. Do I need to do anything special to legally own them in TX? Do I simply just pack them up and drive them to my new residence? Or do I need to ship them to an FFL there? Do I need to contact the DOJ and let them know?

Is there a good resource that tells me what all needs to be done?

I'm moving to AZ in a couple of weeks.
First requirement for me is removing the Thordson stock and installing DD furniture.
Then putting the 20" A-2 upper on the A-2 lower.
Many of my guns are returning to AZ where I originally bought them 35 years ago.
The dozen PX4 10-round mags will be handy for practicing mag changes and I won't be as concerned dropping them on the hard, rocky AZ ground.

Hahaha... Lucky me I guess. Come join me... Get out of this crazy place.

I'll be sure to let you all know how much freedom I am enjoying with my 30rd mags and my suppressor when I get one.

Summary: What firearms you can own, and what you can do with your firearms is only limited by NFA and for handguns a carry permit should you wish to carry. Like it should be.

Just pack them and take them with you...

There is no need to contact CA DOJ.

Its different in free states. Most of them are quite liberal to gun owners.
My new home state allows a loaded handgun in your vehicle.

When I bought my first gun in my new home state, I was almost at the gun store and forgot my secondary form of residency. drove all the way to the house to pick up utility bills, vehicle registration (I was driving a Cali company vehicle), etc etc. Got to the gun store and asked them what forms I needed. They replied, Drivers license, and if you want to avoid the background check fees a CCW, I didn't have a CCW, but I felt pretty stoopid going all the way home to pick up a 'secondary' proof of residency. Cali sure sucks

It is so easy buying, transporting, etc etc etc in a free state, makes you realize how bass ackwards Cali is

Good to know. Thanks all for the input.

                  Now a more subjective question...

How would you go about transporting all your firearms (long guns and handguns) considering you will be stopping frequently and overnight at a hotel/motel for 1 or 2 nights?

How would you keep them safe and secure? Just leave them in their cases in the Uhaul truck overnight at the hotel? Doesn't sit too well with me. I've always been paranoid about leaving my guns in parked cars. Even for short periods of time with me close by.

What's the best way to go about doing it safely and securely?

Buy the U haul large wardrobe boxes. pack your rifles in sleeves or towels and put them in a wardrobe box pack them at the front of the truck with everything else blocking them...

                    Nobody cares about wardrobe boxes.
                    ]
Use the Large Wardrobe Box to pack clothes on hangers. This size wardrobe moving box is ideal for packing shirts, blouses, and pants for moving or storage.

Pistols I would pack in suitcases and bring inside at night.

Buy some chain and chain the steering wheel to the brake pedal. Get a good lock for the back of the truck.

I would take them in every hotel stop with a bell cart, only because rental trucks at hotels might be easy hot wire targets

If possible, back the truck up closely against a wall/structure.

Q: How long is the waiting period to buy a Handgun / Shotgun / Rifle in Texas?
A: Depends on if someone is ahead of you in line

Q: I just moved to Texas, do I have to register my firearms?
A: No, but register to vote so you'll never have to.

Q: I just inherited / bought a gun from someone in Texas, do I need to transfer the gun to my name?
                          A: No, enjoy your inheritance/purchase

Q: What is required to purchase a firearm in the state of Texas?
A: You will need a valid state-issued ID. Many FFLs will not sell to out-of-state residents. This is due to your liberal state’s gun laws.

Q: Can I carry a firearm on my person?
A: Yes, with a simple permit that must be issued

Q: Can I strap a gun on my hip in Texas?
A: Of course this is Texas and it is required to have a specific BBQ gun. https://www.google.com/search?q=bbq+...w=1396&bih=623

Q: Can I carry a firearm in my vehicle?
A: Yes. even if not a citizen of Texas, concealed and may be loaded and within reach.

Q: Are machine guns / suppressors / short-barreled firearms, etc. legal in the state of Texas?
A: Yes. most FFLs in Texas will be happy to sell them to you.

Q: Are “assault weapons” banned in Texas?
A: No. restrictions on so-called “assault weapons” such as semi-auto AR15, FAL, G3 / HK91 rifles. Even if you built it yourself

Q: Is there a limit on the number of rounds a magazine may hold?
A: No. everything is bigger in Texas.

Well . . . its a question on how many rifles/guns total you have. Its a lot of work if you have hundreds. But personally I would NOT leave them in a U-Haul or any vehicle in a motel parking lot. Its a hot bed for thieves and transients as they be watching and scouting. With that said, I would not put them in obvious gun cases, instead I would put them in either long upright luggage or baseball bags and take them into my room and out the next day. Sure its a lot of work but at least its with me. And when the spotters sees your luggage and baseball bags taken into your room, at least its not the obvious gun cases which might give them more ideas.

I driven from CA to TX before yeah depending on which part of TX is your destination you probably have to spend 2 nights. Good luck and drive safe.

I have 4 long guns (1 shotgun, 1 AR, 1 Custom Bolt Action, and 1 22 Bolt Action) and 3 handguns. Not a large collection but enough to make it a chore to take them in and out of the truck each night.

Should I break them all down and just take the receivers with me or the whole thing?

What if I put all the cases into a large deck box that also locks and toward the front of the truck? Won't help if the whole truck is stolen but might if they just get into the back.
