This is exactly why when we leave California, it will be to a location that we can make in a single day of driving.... pretty much anything west of Las Cruces and south of Reno.

Yep... in the 90s, some of the Fidonet guitar forum members would get together once a year in Portland or here in LA.
Since I had a sizeable collection of both guitars and amps, I would take pretty much everything I owned with me so those who flew in (some from Europe) didn't have to deal with bringing their guitar/amp.

We would drive straight-through on the way up, but would stop 2 or 3 times on the way home. Every night, we'd unload the pickup and drag the guitar cases and amps into the room (we made sure to get a ground-floor room).

To be honest, 4 long and 3 hand is not that bad. a chore, sure but at least I know it will be with me in the room. I'm not stating every motel parking lot is bad but based on my travel experiences I see many "interesting people" hanging around gas stations, motels, truck stops and etc. If I have to spend a night, I make sure I have all my valuable stuff with me in my room and sleeping with my loaded HD gun next to me.

Its your call. I've expressed my opinion on this subject. btw today in the news (I forgot what station) but another U-Haul was stolen and that person's entire possession was stolen. Just FYI.
