2018/2019 AMMO LAW THREAD - ask here, not a new thread

I've spoken personally to 4 people who were denied ammo purchases for calibers that they owned, but the firearms were purchased pre-registration... so not on file. Also spoke to a Walmart employee who said he's had to deny sales for the same reason.
I don't have any other evidence other than what they've told me. Made me wonder/worry because both my AR lowers were bought after 2014, and were registered as "Multi-Cal". Also own a couple other long-guns that were bought pre-2014, so not registered.95,000,000 people die each day in the U.S. from gun violenceComment

The type, caliber, brand, and quantity of ammo you are buying has nothing to do with the DOJ authorization to purchase. All of the product information goes into the system AFTER the authorization to purchase is returned.
This process simply clears the INDIVIDUAL and authorizes the individual to purchase ammunition. Once authorized, you can buy as much of anything you want (and your credit card can withstand).[/QUOTE]Comment

I happened to have a free morning on Sunday and went to the gun show at the OC Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. It was a far cry from two years ago or so when lines for the large central plaza ammo vendors went around the building. Instead, there were maybe 2 to 6 people hanging around each large ammo booth in the couple of hours I was there and going from building to building.
I witnessed one individual ask about a couple types of ammo and the response from the clerk was "do you have at least 30 minutes?" When the incredulous prospective purchaser asked why, he was told 2-20 minutes for the background check -which is run first - and 2-4 minutes for each box/kind of ammo purchased which has to have separate forms filled out for each one.
Personally, I was ready to make a 1,500 round purchase and brave the new background check but decided to punt when I saw the vendor had hiked the price by $20.00 over their price elsewhereLast edited by ARFrog; 08-20-2019, 8:44 PM.sigpic

Been dealing with this new ammo law trying to get ready for dove season. I did not understand that Real ID was going to be required for firearm and ammunition purchases when I renewed my license in May. Unfortunately I just noticed my passport is also expired. So with my FLA license and no valid passport it looks like I can't buy ammo. My wife does have a real ID. I was going to bring her along with me and have her get some trap ammo for both of us and a few non lead boxes for dove. She doesn't have a firearm on file though so she'd need the $19 background check. If she gets the full background check will she then be good for future ammo purchases? Or will she need to pay $19 and have the waiting period every time? And what is this I'm reading now about caliber? Does she need to have a gun on file of the same caliber she's buying? Or do I, when I eventually get my Real ID, also need to register every caliber of weapon I own to be able to buy ammunition for them?Last edited by JonnyGSX; 08-21-2019, 4:35 PM.Comment

What I really came here to say is how sad and frustrated I am to read your post.
Here is a guy who just wants to go dove hunting, and he has to get a law degree in order to feel comfortable doing so. This is so wrong.Comment

First, I will say that I don't have your answer, so I apologize in advance. I am sure that someone will come along presently with the right information for you.

Ironic eh, considering:
Did your birth certificate expire, too? You needed it to get the passport, right? The BC and your FLA license gets you ammo. This was explained to you in another thread, but you elected to have the expired passport sent to you.
I honestly have no idea where my birth certificate is. Getting a certified copy isn't a simple process. I got my passport when I still lived in the midwest, not sure what was even required at the time. I didn't elect to have my passport sent to me, because it was expired so there was no point.
Not sure why you needed to drag another thread in here when i've made a different post back to the original idea of getting my wife to buy the ammo. Thats the plan now. But thanks for popping up. It was nice to see you again.Comment

I'm sure you aren't actively trying to be condescending and insulting and its just by accident.
