Driver's license expiring before pickup date

    Hello fellow cal gun folks,

I recently purchased a firearm from Big 5, and my license expires in a few days even though I've submitted a renewal. My new license will probably be here in 3 weeks. But my expiration date shows a couple of days before pickup.

If I pick up with an expired license will they say no go?

It's really the only government ID that I have. Is there any chance that I can pick it up with expired license?

If anybody knows the specific laws about ID and pick up in California can you help me out? I looked it up but I can't seem to find any definitive answers.

Thank you all for your time, have a great Christmas season.

I also applied for CCW in Contra Costa County, and I'll go to the CCW forms and let you all know how that goes.

Unfortunately, an expired drivers license is no longer considered as a valid form of ID in California for any legal or financial transaction. I went through this with an elderly relative that became a non-person the day after their license expired.

However, you already provided Big 5 with a valid drivers license when you started your DROS. It would appear that your DROS has not been rejected by the DOJ due to a "DMV Reject" because you have renewed your license and your driving privileges have not expired; just the little card in your hand. Normally it would seem that you are good to go (see the link below), but we're talking about Grande Cinco here and they love an overabundance of caution.

On the bright side, you can still vote.

Hey thanks for the link in the answer sir.

I usually kind of dig through the searches to find out if I'm reposting, but I've been really busy, it's just this time of year as you can imagine.

I'll read through that link and see what happens. Worst comes to worst I just have to wait a few extra days to pick up my rifle. Hopefully not so many extra days that I have to pay for anything twice. Although the big five guy did offer to cover it if I did so that was really nice of them. Considering it's my fault for not renewing on time. But **** happens right?

Thanks again for your help and insight I appreciate it.

I can understand a license expiring and not being able to drive, but for ID purposes it should still work (but doesn't). Because once your license expires, it's not you anymore in the picture? I never understood that.

Since I can't reply to the thread that was linked, I'll keep this one life to let everybody know what happens. I think it'll be nice to have a 2017 example as well though go along with that example from 2012.

            Wish me luck everybody.

This thread reminds my of last week, when I took my Sister-in-Law to the Mazda Dealership to buy a new car.
After the first round of haggling and finding out that the payments were a bit more than she wanted to pay, we went outside to talk about it.
After a few minutes I asked her if she was ready to write a check for the down payment right now, if they give her the deal.

She looks at me in silence for a minute. Then tells me that she didn't bring her checkbook.
We drove out to Tracy, from Campbell.

How about a little planning here folks!

                Well. Of course.

That's not helpful now. Hopefully others will learn from this mistake, but also know what can happen of they get in a similar situation due to forgetting to plan everything on life perfectly.

With that said, it totally was on me. But it was not a long planned buy, and things fall through the cracks.

With a new baby and 70 hour end-of-year work weeks, hard to get everything done. It is still my fault. But also, it could happen to almost anyone.

I got an unexpected bonus and decided to get a rifle I really wanted because of a sale.

In my defense, I had renewal on my to do list for the new year, because you get a 60-day grace period for your driver's license expiration when you're driving.

I also didn't expect such a thing to matter, big mistake in this state. Now I'm worried they'll find out about my suspension from Sunday School when I was 13 for kicking a priest.

And now I'm finding out that may or may not be the case with a rifle pick up. (The ID expiring between DROS and pick up, not priest kicking...yet).

Either way, CalGun comrade, give people some slack.

Per my ATF inspector if your dl expires during the waiting period, you can't pickup until you have a new license with a valid date.

I had a customer that had to wait an extra week since his expired the day before he could pickup.

My story was both funny and relevant. So I told it.
Hey, just a suggestion, why not go down to your local DMV and get the temp without the pic. Then show them both to the store clerk.

They tell you 3 weeks at the DMV, but my "replacement: cdl arrived in just over a week. Holidays may take a little longer, but just wait to get it.

Public Where do I find laws regarding the possession of firearms? I'm not sure whether I have a California record that would prevent me from owning/possessing a firearm. Is there a way to find out before I attempt to purchase one? What is the process for purchasing a firearm in California? How can I obtain a Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) license? Can I give a firearm to my adult child? Can he/she give it back to me later? Can I give a firearm to my spouse or registered domestic partner? Can he/she give it back to me later?

Thanks for that info. I did the same thing as a previous person and called the California bureau of firearms and they said I did NOT need it for pick up.

Either way, waiting until January isn't the end of the world so long as it isn't past the 30 day mark. I just will miss some vacation shooting days.

Call Big 5 and tel them the problem and ask if you need a current DL to pick it up. Make sure you are talking with the person in charge of firearms. I may be wrong, but do not believe it is required for pick up, unless it is store policy. If they say all is good, get there name and call ahead to make sure they will be there when you go to pick it up. Remember, last I heard Big 5 makes you wait to pick up on Day 11 to make sure that the 10 24 hour days have elapsed. They may have changed that and if they did good for you. Most DROS papers tell you exactly what time of a certain day the then runs.

Well since the "ATF" has absolutely nothing to do with anything related to the California required waiting period, the BATFE would not care, nor would they bother with any California regulations.

A California DOJ inspector would be the agent of the agency which could and do care.

AFAIK a valid ID Or drivers license is required to pick up a firearm after the California waiting period. California law. Not federal law.
