    AR Pistol Options

    Hello all,
I was planning to build an AR pistol for home defense and possibly to add to CCW when I end up getting one. Then it occurred to me that using a "homemade" firearm for self defense may be frowned upon, and with all the new legislation I'm worried about the possibility of getting snagged on one of the laws, which I'm really not interested in.

    My question:
If I know someone moving into the state, is there any law against them buying an AR pistol before moving here and then registering it here, and then selling it to me?

The cost of the preban ones is ridiculous, but I am having a hard time giving up on ever owning one.

You could only get it if it is fixed mag. It won't go on your CCW.

Thanks for the response. So with a patriot mag release there should be nothing preventing that transaction, right? People can still bring in AR pistols and sell?

Also, why not on a CCW? Someone told me that it has to be .25cal or larger in SB County, but if it were in 300BO is there another reason it wouldn't be allowed? I'm not looking to carry on my person, and doubt I'd ever take it places, but just for the possibility of having it my trunk loaded.

      Thanks again

Having it maglocked would make it gtg. I personally have tried to get an AK pistol added and it was a no go.

          FYI.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff Department will not approve an AR/AK style pistol or an AOW to be listed on the permits they issue.

Kind of off topic, but just curious OP . . . . why do you want to put an AR pistol on a CCW?

No worries, as stated earlier, so I could have the option of keeping it loaded in my trunk or something.

I by no means would try to carry it places, and realistically I value it's usefulness in home defense far more than any possible situation where I'd need a trunk pistol capable of long shots. So basically, I would likely never keep it in the car, but I only have 1 handgun currently so I figured I wouldn't be losing anything by using one of the CCW spots for it.

                  Thanks for the info!

That's very useful to know because I was thinking I'd have to get it in 300BO to satisfy the >.25 requirement, although I want 223/556 more.

I'm looking for a way to rep you, not sure if this forum has that feature.

You should consider how loud a .223 AR pistol is and the penetrating factor of those rounds. Throw in having to break the action to reload, and I'm not sure there's a worst option for your home defense use.

Thanks for your input. With a 10.5" barrel I believe the muzzle velocity is around 2400 fps which I believe would be enough to expand/fragment depending on the round. The demos I've seen on youtube show the frag rounds under penetrating drywall when compared to how many sheets standard hollow point hand gun rounds will penetrate. I've heard the argument that you want the lightest, fastest moving projectile you can get for these reasons.

Please share your info that contradicts this. I'm not here to prove it's the best, I'm here to learn what is the best for this use. I totally get the having to break the action part, that sucks balls. I really like the built in weapon retention with a 2 point sling, and the ability to place precision shots under extreme stress (I understand that home shooting would be very close distances, but also having played airsoft with an exact replica of my glock, I understand how easily getting shot at can intro a few inches of play at the muzzle and how that turns into drastically off target shots.)

I think a reality check is in order as far as your home defense scenario. I'm not saying this to be a jerk, because I'm guilty of this as well, but we dream up some pretty silly reasons to own particular firearms. FWIW I own an AR pistol with a 10.5" barrel and I know for a fact I'd be better off in my house with my G19. Are you going to put hearing protection in? Because if you discharge that AR pistol in your house you'll probably have a lifetime case of tinnitus if you ever hear again at all. A 9mm is loud but you'll get over it. And unless it's a registered AW, tactical mag changes would be nearly impossible and for that reason alone it would stay in my safe.

I have an electronic headset on top of where I keep my defensive tools. So far, every time I've gone for my gun I've put them on and turned them on. I totally get that perhaps I wouldn't have time, and if that were the case, I'd go for my G19 as well.

The reloads part though really blows and I totally agree... and I really love my hearing, I wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize it so that's why regardless of the gun, unless I have to go NOW I will grab the headset. Not to mention, it gives you slightly better than normal hearing, and after a shot indoors with any gun you'll be lucky to hear anything for a little while. With the headset you can go back to hearing everything fine. I think for these reasons it should be a part of any person's home defense plan. Of course, given that they have the 5 seconds to put it on and turn it on.

I bought the AR pistol with crazy bug-out scenarios in my head, I'll be the first to admit they are far fetched and the weapon was never truly intended to be anything more than a range toy and a "because I can" thing. Now I don't know what I'm going to do with it. Its not very useful and I don't want to register it, I'll probably just put it on gunbroker and sell it out of state unless I get an AZ or ID place by the end of the year. I never considered if for an HD choice.
