What's the difference? What does the CCW check include that the standard DROS check doesn't?

DROS Background Check vs CCW Background Check
Tags: None -
Everything! Actually the CCW background check goes much deeper, DROS only checks if you have anything prohibitive. CCW is a full FBI check on your history, good and bad to try and establish patterns or traits about you. When I went in for the interview they had a list of every traffic violation going back to when I started driving. Every documented firearms transaction I've made in the last approx 20 yrs. Police reports of my neighborhood etc.
I have a friend who owns a pawn shop/gun store that I have done a lot of business with over the years. During the interview he kept asking why I frequent the pawn shop so much. He tried several times to twist things on his list just to get a rise out of me, but in the end I passed and received my CCW. -

Wow....the interview process must be more extensive in your county/city than here in the OC. I didnt, nor have I heard of any OC applicants getting grilled like that at their CCW interview. If it had happened, I got nothing to hide, but your story reminds me of the interviews I went thru when I had tried to interview for a LEO position when I was younger.....CCW Safe

When I first got my CCW, about 26 yrs ago, I went in and sat across the desk from The Sheriff for the interview. No back ground check just a quick talk and on my way. I let it lapse during the 90's, so it was an eye opener when I applied for a new one.Comment

Some differences... (varies depends on the issuing agency)
Part of the background check process with my issuing agency...
1. They sent an "employment verification" letter to my employer, informing them that I was applying for a CCW permit and asked them questions about the type of person I am.
2. They performed a "residency check", in which they checked to see if I lived at the address listed on my permit application and interviewed my neighbors to get their perception on the type of person I am.sigpic

Nothing like making neighbors suspicious of you. What makes them think neighbors have a good grasp of how you really are to begin with? What if the neighbors are jackass hoodlums and you are a goody-two-shoes that they hate? This is just wrong on so many fronts.Comment

As I understand it, in San Bernardino, the neighbor interviews did not mention CCW or guns. Just character stuff. When I applied I had to submit 3 letters of reference. I got mine from my gun dealer, an ex-LEO and a Fire Chief.

Actually that check on your criminal history is what your IA did, not part of your FBI check. The FBI doesn't car about your traffic violations, police reports from your neighborhood, etc.Everything! Exactly. Most people would automatically assume the worst if the police were to question them about a particular neighbor, even if the officer tried to reassure them!Comment

Every IA is different, part of what makes CA such a colorful place to follow the process.
Ventura SD did the Interview BEFORE they did the background check and the interview was primarily to make sure I didn't want to change or expand/add to any of the answers on the written App. It was pretty short and pretty professional. Someone mentioned that they do residence verification by bouncing the DMV record and County Tax records off the application address, which makes sense. They may have asked my neighbors for all I know, no one mention being contacted though.
What's the background check consisted of, who knows? I assume an FBI criminal background as well as other things, probably similar to what the DHS did when I applied for the Global Entry program and what I go through every so often for my Security Clearance for my job. Whatever it was I passed not only that but also the "Good Morals" requirement as well.
I've actually been contacted by investigators at previous residences I'ver had here in the county. They all said it had to do with employment verification and they were either SD Detectives or the folks the feds send out to do background checks for gov jobs.Last edited by baggss; 01-16-2016, 12:46 AM.Comment

Here in Kern County they just call you on the phone if they have any questions or need clarification about your application.sigpic
