    Gun registration after leaving CA

Just curious how this affects someone when they leave CA.

Fir instance, all my handguns that I've purchased, or via infamilial transfer, are registered to me. Does that regist2follow me if I move to a free state, or better yet?

    No.

Those records are maintained in DOJ's Automated Firearms System (AFS).

The AFS is unique to California. It only maintains historical records. Nothing gets updated when you move. That's the way a historical system works. It will record the fact that "on 1-23-2011 you DROS'd a particular firearm." Nothing that you can do at a later time will change the fact that "on 1-23-2011, you DROS'd that firearm."

You can use the "No Longer in Possession Form." (It's actually mis-titled. The form also has a section for you to report that you are no longer a California resident - even if you still possess the firearm).

But all that form will do is simply create a new historical entry to reflect the information that you provided.

An LEO making inquiry into the system will still see all of the historical records. Nothing goes away.

No, don't tell them a thing. Let them have dirty data. In fact, sell it when in a state where you can do FTF. Then it can be lost forever.

Don't sell it in the free state because it will still in your name.Sell it here and you are free to go.Good luck , I will move also sooner or later.

                  just offloading a few, 3 or 4.
the rest are just too hard to replace, or sentimental.

Slightly off topic, but kinda the same topic, what is the process for me taking possesion of my Dad's RAW?

Does he have to physically hand it to me out of state? Or xfer via AW-licensed FFL? Or can I just take it on my way out haha.

AFAIK, you cannot take possession of his RAW as a resident of the state of kommiefornia. They cannot be sold or transferred to a resident of this state. (Unless it is kept out of the state of kommiefornia).

If I'm wrong, someone will along shortly to correct me I'm sure.

If you leave CA, don't even worry about the guns registered to you. It doesn't matter and it's stupid to fill out that No Longer In Possession form and tell CA DOJ what you did with your guns. There's no benefit to doing so.

As for your dad's registered assault weapon, just have him fly out to you in your new home state, go to a gun store and do the interstate transfer. Remember, these guns aren't assault weapons outside of CA, MD, NY, NJ, MA, and a few other states. Also, stop thinking like you're still in CA, there's no need to tell CA DOJ what you're doing, or ask them permission to buy a gun, or pay taxes to CA. You don't live in CA any more.

so the transaction has to happen outside of ca? maybe he can ship via ffl. i doubt he'll be visiting me in TX (due to my mom's health needs).

I just want the damn lower to comeplete it. It's a Colt Sporter HBAR, nice little 20" a2 style. Have it on a Mega Gator now, but would love to return it to all original.

crazy how its basically the exact same gun save for the engravings. "banned by name".... haha

Although it's hypothetically possible to transfer a registered AW between two people in CA, it's practically impossible. Once your father crosses the CA state line, the rifle is no longer an "assault weapon". If your father ships it from CA to TX, he has to find an FFL licensed in CA to handle assault weapons to do the shipping.

Thanks. that's likely the route we'll take, have him ship the lower via FFL and I'll just throw the buffer tube and stock back on. It's the big pin style so it was never stripped.

There is no registration in free states. Or they are not free states. Your guns will still be in your name in CA until you sell them in CA through CA FFL. Or if you sell them out of state then fill out "no longer in possession" form. I didn't fill it out when I sold all my CA guns from out of state to CA resident through FFL. I just left it be because it will still be registered to new name in CA at the time of DROS. So it's up to you.
