speaking of goldwings...my old bike, with scabbard. scabbard wasnt completed yet when i took the pics.

no one ever messed with me about it, no cop even even checked if there was a gun in it, even when i went to sacramento for a week.

If you go for the belt-and-suspenders method of keeping the Man out of your life, just get a nondescript soft case, that guitar case is a PERFECT idea, and make sure you can lock it just to put off ANY abuse of power. And make your trip to the range as direct as practicable and you'll have a solid defense when the time comes that an ignorant-of-the-law law enforcement officer troubles you.
Even teh obvious scabbards are a great idea. I'd just be sure to keep a printout of the long-gun transportation regs in there too. Because some hoplophobic officer will surely pull an unsafe u-turn in his haste to stomp on you for having the temerity to actually exercise your rights..

I've onlky done it with take down rifles, I plan on putting afolding stock on a 10/22 eventually for this reason as well mostly. I'd mount a scabbard if I lived in a more free state.

When carrying a non-take down rifle, I have used a Western-style leather scabbard. Cops just cruised by w/o giving me any grief at all.
I have also used a guitar case as suggested above. I didn't like the idea of the soft case though, so I used a cheap, but hard case. I thought about using one of the fancy (expensive) guitar cases but the guy at the shop mentioned that an expensive case equals an expensive item inside & that I'd just be raising the odds of it being stolen.
For carrying a rifle or shotgun that does take down (like my SxS 12 ga.), I've mounted a large tool box as my trunk. It carries 'whatever' as a normal thing & the rifle or shotgun when I need that.

Hah. At least you guys haven't started asking me to fix your cars in the parking lot.

                    ....yet.
