How about a sticky with stats?

I've seen quite a few posts asking for information - data etc about guns/crime rates etc.
Instead of providing links to independent sites why not a sticky here that is centered around the request.
It could really provide this site some new traffic

Take that with a grain of salt. I tried to standardize other countries categorization for each crime according to the FBI's categorization. Results extrapolated from respective government's crime reports that are available online.

Edit: Please do not assume this is accurate. If I find flaws in the method which the results were achieved, it will be revised.

It's a fun exercise, but it has basic problems even to attempt.

            1) the underlying assumption is that comparisons of one country to another is valid. I'll argue it is NOT.

            2) statistics from any country, including ours, are influenced by politics, and infrastructure/capabilities. Some statistics cannot be verified. FBI sometimes publishes notes about missing or unreliable data from some sources; we can sort of correlate FBI crime data with CDC on injuries and the National Crime Victimization Survey. Some reporting agencies are suspected to minimize crime within their jurisdictions, since their heads perceive, probably correctly, that lower numbers suggest greater success of their agencies.

            3) There are cultural differences, as well as political considerations, for classifying crimes one way or another. Read Kopel's 'The Samurai, the Mountie, and the Cowboy' for more on that. A bit dated, but the argument still holds, I think.

I'll also point out that year-over-year stats, even from the same sources, can mean different things. A couple of years ago, UK changed their reporting year (I think it was from Jan-Dec to July-June) and reclassified some crimes.

And I'll repeat my recommendation to read Braman and Kahan "More Statistics, Less Persuasion" and related works from them.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Updated Canada's homicide stats. Mistakenly included their attempted murder numbers into the homicide category, my bad Canada.
