Given that POTUS is the end point of legislation not its beginning, I'm generally satisfied a statement like this. Its not filled with equivocation. It hits all the salient points that are important to 2nd amendment'ers. It makes it very clear that he understand the issues and what he would sign and what it wouldn't. Its current, prominent, and aimed at a national audience. This would be a very difficult position to back slide away from. In the world of real politik, this is about as iron clad as you have any right to expect. Show me which other special interest group Mitt (or any other candidate for that matter), has given this kind of BJ to. Mitt cant correct mistakes made in the past any more than you or I can. What you've got here is as good as its gonna get till you nominate me for President. You guys would love my "Dillon In Every Pot" campaign speech that I deliver a while walking back and forth to the 300 yard berm to check targets.

Look at the tyranny of party -- at what is called party allegiance, party loyalty -- a snare invented by designing men for selfish purposes -- and which turns voters into chattles, slaves, rabbits, and all the while their masters, and they themselves are shouting rubbish about liberty, independence, freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, honestly unconscious of the fantastic contradiction... I like his hair and the dye-job on his eyebrows is pretty good but that's about it."War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

Come on now, don't knock Mitt. After all, he's been a NRA member for what, almost a year now.
But seriously, flip-floppers aren't all bad. As long as you are the strongest wind, you'll get what you want. They're a heck of a lot better than a principled anti.
BTW what little I saw of Fred on the recent FOX "debate" made me wish he had never gotten in the race because Newt said he wouldn't run if Fred did.
Looking at the NH numbers, it seems like Hillary and BO are virtually even, and on the Repub side, it looks like the "good" Repubs (Fred, RP, Huck) + Mitt and the "bad" (McCain & Guili) have total percentages that are almost equal. Could Newt bring all the Repub base together? Could he beat Hill/BO? I think "yes" on both counts. Time to start a "draft Newt" campaign?Last edited by Paladin; 01-09-2008, 8:43 PM.Comment

Mitt is a flip flopper, this has some good clips of him talking about the 2nd A.
and another one,

Mitt's record and his pre-2008 election talk shows his true stance, and how he would be as President - he certainly would sign a AWB.

Mitt is not even a top 3 pick on the republican ticket for anyone if looking at them strictly on the 2nd Amendment line. Right now, in the sense strictly to their 2nd Amendment record those strongest on the ticket would be Ron Paul, Huckabee, and Thompson.

Originally posted by Toolbox XThe sad facts is all of the strong pro-gun candidates have no real chance of winning the nomination and election. We must choose from the few that have a chance, and we must also consider all of the other issues facing our great country.
Obviously Romney has changed his mind about banning assault weapons. Last year he said he would ban them, and now he says he won't. The compromise he has come up with is an excellent strategy. He doesn't scream to the anti-gun people that he wants to flood the streets with Uzi's, instead he says he will keep all the laws just as they are.
What impresses me the most is when he says this:
This statement has convinced me that Romney understands that crime is caused by criminals, not guns.
We would all prefer to elect someone who has a passion for assault weapons like we do, but none of those candidates are going to get elected. We must go to Plan B which is elect the next best person who has a chance of winning. Right now that is Romney, Huckabee, or McCainComment

The problem with Huckabee is like Jimmy Carter he is a preacher first and that will have an impact on how he votes and what he does, Thompson is kinda an unknown for a long record of what hee will stand for.sigpic

CNN was predicting that Thompson will drop out well before the end of the primaries, and based on his lack of participation in the New Hampshire debate I think that that it is pretty accurate prediction. Would be nice if he would just get it done so that those extra votes could go to the next best candidate.
That quote by Romney above is nice, but how do you know that that is his true feeling on the issue and not his "this is what they want to hear" line?"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." -AristotleComment

You have got to be kidding with Huckabee right ?
Looks like old Huck is in bed with the one worlders.
illegal immigration news & political action to stop illegal immigration and any form of amnesty for illegal immigrants
That on its own is reason enough to not vote for him.
How can you be pro 2A and against our national and state sovereignty.
You cant play both sides of the coin your either for constitutional government (Ron Paul) or your against it.
Got to agree, Huckabee or Thompson are closer to it then Paul is right now.
