38% of Americans still favor stricter gun control laws

What is the matter with these people??

Gun crimes remains a common feature in the news, but most Americans still don’t see a need for stronger gun control.A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 38% of American Adults now think the United States needs stricter gun control laws, but that’s virtually unchanged in regular tracking back to February 2006. Fifty percent (50%) see no need for tougher anti-gun laws, while 11% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls).  Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.  The survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on January 6-7, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

I'd venture that 2/3 of them don't know what the existing laws even are.

In any poll, there is a minimum of 15% who are complete fools.

Don't forget the fool percentage in this poll.

To anti-gunners, 38% is an overwhelming majority. You can't argue with their facts.

            Ding, ding, ding!

Consider the Greatest Generation as one example. While there are many who grew up with guns and used them without much ado, they also are the ones who had bigger fish to fry - they worried about the Cold War, giving their children a better life than they had, etc...and guns/shooting were simply not a political issue (or even a prevalent issue) for most. GCA '68 came to be while they were in their prime. As a whole, guns and related issues were not passed on as a priority to their kids (Baby Boomers). That's obviously a generalization, so treat it as such - but the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomers combined are an enormous demographic in this country today.

My grandfather grew up poor in rural Missouri, hunted quail/rabbits and sold them to a local restaurant as a teen, served in WWII, Korea, and retired as an E-9 (Navy Corpsman attached to Marines) when Vietnam was ramping up (1966). He and my grandmother now winter in Florida. There was a shooting about two years ago in their retirement community, and my grandpa says, "I don't think that guy's gun was even registered!" I just let it go...

38% of what exactly and who's paying for the survey and who makes sure there are no fakes on it? Take 38% of all America, every single respondent then we can debate.

Florida doesn't register guns, but your grandfather sounds like he's earned the right not to be corrected even when he's wrong.

Yep, that was my point. He's no stranger to guns, lives in a free state, and has no clue about the actual laws there. He's not alone in that.

As far as me correcting him, there was little value in me doing so, so I didn't. We quickly went back to him enjoying the company of his great grandson.

The point we're making is that it shouldn't even be that close, more like 95% opposed, and that even the slightest plausibility of there being anything remotely resembling 38% for them addresses a serious problem.
