Something I never dreamed would be possible: Residents are mounting a recall effort against Mayor Quan because crime in Oakland is out of control:
I thought that in the whacked-out "logic" of the Bay Area, crime is a reaction to the structural violence of the white patriarchy, and business owners are capitalist exploiters, and so the more crazy left-wing your mayor is, the better, hence the election of Mayor Quan. If Mayor Quan is a typical far-left Bay Area politician, she will not be happy as long as there is one profitable business remaining in the city of Oakland or one resident left who is above poverty and can survive without some kind of public assistance.
I guess Oaklander is right: there are some people in Oakland who care more about taxpayers, business owners and peaceful residents than about criminals.
I hope this effort succeeds, and if I may dream, I would dream that LTC reform be a part of the effort. I realize that the mayor and city council have no direct authority over LTC issuance. However, they are able to write the job description for the police chief, and they can, if they chose to, include LTC policy terms and compliance with that policy in the job description, and they can fire a police chief for not performing up to the standards in the job description.
If people in Oakland are fed up enough to want to recall a left-wing whacko like Quan maybe they're fed up enough that they would consider LTC as one aspect of the solution.
Unfortunately:
This may indicate that the problem is not that Mayor Quan is ineffective but that she's the wrong flavor of left-wing whacko. Ah Oakland politics.
A group of Oakland residents filed a petition today declaring their intent to recall Mayor Jean Quan, saying she has failed to provide strong leadership for the city, particularly on crime and the development of the former Oakland Army Base.

Unfortunately:
The signatures include some of Ron Dellums' supporters, including Gene Hazzard. It also includes a former Oakland Unified School District board member, Toni Cook.
