    Buying Shot Gun

Is it illegal to buy a shot gun (not c&r) it has serial numbers for cash with out ppt? He bought it from. Friend 3 years ago and he also has no paper work so should I pass on it? Or can I buy it and try to register it?

Can you please clarify for me when do I not have to do a ppt ? Is it only for rifles 50 years and older that the ppt is not required?

    No. Do the PPT.

If you aren't sure, do the PPT.

If the shotgun is under 50 years old, yes, it is illegal.

No, both of you have to be there. Unless it's a registered assault weapon, there is no registration. If it is a registered assault weapon, it cannot be transferred.

If in doubt, do the PPT.

If you are worried about anything else, then just pass on the deal.

It can't be the only shotgun for sale.

            Shotguns aren't "registered".

To be legal sale, you and the seller friend go to an FFL and do a PPT.

There is no "paperwork" he needs to bring with him (other than his ID requirements.

If they won't go to a dealer with you, RUN away.

He can do the ppt even though the Browning 12g is not in his name? When did registering shot guns go into effect? What year maybe this shotgun was never registered when bought new?

shotguns have never been registered in CA, but that doesn't mean that you can just decide to do a paperless transfer.

Just have the seller meet you at the FFL and do a PPT. (and some FFLs will tell you that you don't have to do a PPT because shotguns aren't "registered".) insist that the FFL do a PPT for you.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

It was never registered. There is no registration for shotguns.

If your friend owns it, he needs to accompany you to the FFL so you can do the PPT. Once he does that he has nothing more to do with the shotgun.
