IIRC one gun manufacture used a "rifled" barrel with straight rifling to avoid the NFA AOW category. I would think if you used a rifled barrel & a grip that sits at an angle to the barrel you should be fine to the letter of the law. IMO it's kinda like playing with fire, though. The problem is with CA's anti-gun climate & that the authorities are given too much leeway to prosecute the states far too numerous vague anti-gun laws. As shown by the roster they do not really want any handguns available to citizens & will keep making the safety standards more and more stringent. They will also keep increasing the testing costs to manufactures. I wonder when the safe long gun roster will start?

i too still have trouble understanding the wording of the law as to what the difference between a zip gun and a home build

other than if the gun would fall under the provisions of the nfa tax like a smoothbore pistol or say a nail slam fire pipe shotgun that has a short barrel

Not when I made a few in a Pennsylvania high school machine shop........................in 1957.

Of course in those days one could legally purchase a handgun damn near anywhere for cash n' carry.
