Too bad Calguns is useless for legal research.

    Folks,

I'm researching an area of California law. Can't go into details. I attempted to find the code section involved via the search engine, as I know there's been a lot of discussion of the issue here.

Adding search terms BROADENS a search, rather than narrowing it. Even under the advanced search page there doesn't seem to be a way to search for a keyword ALONG WITH another keyword. It's doing "logical or" instead of "logical and".

This problem basically breaks Calguns as a research tool, which is a damned shame.

    Can this be fixed?

I think all the search functionality is built into the BB software and can't be trivially fixed.

That said, you can always use all the search operators available in Google and along with "site:calguns.net" to get a lot of functionality...the only times that doesn't work is if you're trying to find posts only by a specific person or only in certain subforums, for instance.

I quit using the search feature of the BBs, and primarily use Google's narrow down feature.

If I want to narrow down something specific, as an example such as "bullet button" +"harrot" site:calguns.net here is what you get. If I want to search for something within a specific forum, I put the forum within quotes with a + before it; +"2nd Amend. Related Legal & Political Discussion"

The basic catch is bulletin boards typically use a boolean OR for searches. Normal search engines use a boolean AND. It's not too difficult (typically) to change the board software.

That makes a lot of sense...and explains why you get a billion returns on a search that have nothing to do with what you're looking for.

It looks like vBulletin doesn't mind if you modify their code. I'd be happy to do this if CGN doesn't have a programmer available (mods can contact me directly).

I thought I had Kestyll's email address, but turns out I don't. So I sent him a PM. We shall what comes of it. Hopefully, it's a better search function.

vBulletin is horrible at search. Go with Google as others have taught.

You can tie in alternate search engines for vBulletin, but that work seems to have died in favor of people just using Google. On MDShooters, Google seems to index us every few minutes. I have gone to Google looking for info to add to a new thread...only to have that new thread returned as the first choice by Google. I would be amazed if CalGuns wasn't also scanned that fast.

In the advanced search mode, try using a "+" before each search term like this:
                    +search term 1 +search term 2 +search term 3 ...

That works on other sites using V-Bulletin

Also, if there is a link to the wiki on the main page, it isn't obvious to me. A large percentage of noob issues could be addressed with that.

A better search is already built into VBulletin, it's called fulltext and supposed to do exactly that: search for "A and B", as opposed to "A or B".

I believe that's what used on TheFiringLine forum. You type in for instance "russian sks", and you would get the threads where both words were found, or the posts with both words, depending whether you selected to show results as threads or posts. Works pretty well, too.
