    +1

Google search is the only way to go, and that means to actually go to Google and do an advanced search (don't use the CGN plug-in for Google). Google's help for advanced search is good to read and learn.

If you want to find posts by a particular poster, see if they have a sig line that they have been using for a while, then use a quoted phrase from it in the Google search. For example, this Google search would find posts by me:

WhateverTermsYouAreSearchingFor "Gun law complexity got you down" site:calguns.net
Gun law complexity got you down? Get the FAQs, Jack!

        Your search-fu is weak.

Use Google to do the search, it works better.
        Just type this in:
site:calguns.net [insert search terms] (obviously don't need the brackets)
This limits the Google search to be site specific.

Yeah, I assume it's built in to the software and I assume that the vBulletin guys are not text searching and indexing pros, because if they were, they would be doing something other than writing forum software. Like working at Google for example.

Yeah, that's the best way to search forums.

The search feature may be worthless, but I would hardly call Calguns worthless for legal research.

All one need do is ask a good legal question and you'll have some of the finest minds/lawyers give more good information than you even thought existed, and usually within minutes.

            Hardly useless, search function notwithstanding.

Adding search terms BROADENS a search, rather than narrowing it. Even under the advanced search page there doesn't seem to be a way to search for a keyword ALONG WITH another keyword. It's doing "logical or" instead of "logical and".

This problem basically breaks Calguns as a research tool, which is a damned shame.

                  Can this be fixed?
Jim the search engine can be double edged sword. It doesn't work that good but makes it hard for someone looking to dig up dirt.

Uhm... One of the search options is the custom Calguns.net Google search. That should be quite effective.
