    Need some information please!

I want to get a Glock 22, but I am only 19 years old. I am getting it for the police academy and shooting range. How do I get the handgun? My mom is going to buy it, and then write me a note giving me permission to use it. But how does this all work? can the handgun be in my name? can I keep at my house? I need all the information I can get please!
Edited thread title to give more info.

your mom can do an "intrafamilial transfer" of the gun to you. You fill out the form and send it to DOJ with $19 I think it is. You will also need to have a valid HSC card at the time of transfer.

Presuming you are both California residents, your mother can buy the handgun and give it to you.

The restriction on 21 and over is on FFLs transferring, and on non-family members transferring.

You will need to have the CA Handgun Safety Certificate.

You will also have a lot of problems buying ammunition, since selling handgun ammo to under-21 is also forbidden.

      See the Wiki article.

      And, welcome to Calguns!

Can you go to the police academy at 19? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I know you can't work as a LEO until you're 21, so I thought you had to be turning 21 before graudating the academy...?

No, The academy where I am attending, you can join at 18. But yes, you have to be 21 to be a LEO.
The academy I am going to, you need to have a CA approved handgun for range qualifications... thats why I need the gun.

Heres the academy that I am attending if you're interested.

Oh, COD. I actually used to teach Spanish classes there. I've seen that class. It must suck to finish the academy and then have to wait two years to get a job...

Information on Intra-Familial handgun transaction (under 21)

Hello again. I just got some questions answered a few hours ago on under 21 handgun ownership, now I know what to do. Heres the story. I am getting a Glock 22 for the police academy, but I am only 19 years old. My mom is going to buy me the handgun and then transfer it to me by a (INTRA-FAMILIAL HANDGUN TRANSACTION). I know that we both have to take the HGS test and all that. My question now is, is the handgun legally mine? can I have it at my house? Can I take it to the range? Do I have to have a written note by my mom? I need all the info I can take. Thanks.

All yours, but you can't buy ammo for it yet... At least I don't think so. It may be range policy that you have to be 21 to use it there, but there is no law.

Yep, all yours. You can take it anyplace it's legal to have.

Ditto on what the above 2 said. I did the exact same thing with 2 1911's and a S&W 460.

The 21 years old thing only applies to purchases...an Intrafamilial transfer is not a purchase

What's the minimum age to transfer a handgun from say father to daughter? I bought my 12 year old daughter her own Glock 19 but it's really in my name at this point in time.

She'll be training with this as she grows up into an adult and when it's time to move out of the house, she'll be familiar and comfortable with it. I want her to be proficient with the gun for that one day when a "zombie" tries to come through her apartment window or front door.

                            18 per federal law.

By the time she's 18 she won't have to wait until they're coming through her window. By her 18th birthday she'll be able to legally protect herself out and about as well!
