Ivey et al v. Department of Justice - Class action settlement

I searched the forum and couldn't find any information; this is a settlement out-of-court regarding the DoJ's release of CCW holders' info through their Open Justice Firearms Dashboard. There won't be a final settlement hearing until May 6 of this year, but registration cards have been sent in the mail for members of the class to submit claims.

I'd be interested in hearing any additional info that people here have on this case, I haven't been able to find anything online.

Does this have to do with the CCW list public dump that occurred right after BRUEN decision in 2022?

Yes, that's exactly what this is. The suit is settling instead of going to trial, from what I can understand.

Does that mean that every person with a CA CCW whose information was released can submit a claim? If so, who do I send my new address so I can get my registration card?

Try the root address for the link I posted. That's the class action settlement administrator. They have a contact form.

Unless I am misunderstanding something-- not a lawyer, certainly possible-- assuming the settlement is approved, when you submit your information, you will get six months of credit monitoring, unless you are one of the "settlement class representatives."

Not to be ungrateful, but who cares? Six months, wow, generous! Nice way to tell everyone FU without telling them FU.

I have to agree. For 6 months of credit monitoring, there is no way that I am going to give anyone my current information.

6 months of credit monitoring 2+ years after the event is pointless.

It should be 6 years of monitoring credits. 6 months is nothing.

It's the old adding insult to injury tactic. What a joke.

So in true class-action fashion, the lawyers get paid, and the victims get nothing of significance. Shocker.

IIRC, they offered credit monitoring in the letter they sent notifying me of the “accidental” data breach a couple of years ago.

Is there perhaps a chance that Trump's DOJ might now investigate the State of California, officials, contractors, etc. to determine if any actions were taken to violate the rights of gun owners in the State?

From CNN on Trump's Executive Actions today:
Gun control: Trump directed the attorney general to review and assess any actions taken by the federal government between January 2021 and January 2025 — during the Biden administration — that they view as infringing upon Second Amendment rights.

Hell, I did not even get the letter. But, apparently I can update my info by giving the lawyers my new address and get 6 months of monitoring. NO THANKS! Better that they not know.
