a fold down cart is a must if you have to haul a large amount of stuff, i plan on hunkering down until i can figure out how it is "out there" before i move my family around, if at all.

Very nice, applaud you on doing a dry run. Many will be caught off guard how their gear is not ready. Majority aren't in a healthy or athletic condition to make it.Comment

Kudo's on you for getting the family on board..I have a wife that thinks roughing it is staying in a motorhome, A 15 yr old daughter , who is just like her mom. My 2 younger ones 14&13 yrs old=they are down with whatever I do..So, i guess in a true SHTF scenario, thee will only be 3 of us..lolComment

Didn't expect such a big response from you all. Big thanks for the info.
After doing this hike with the family it made me wonder how I ever finished a 7 day High Sierra trip as a boy scout. How did I carry enuf water and food? If only my memory was good.
As some of you said, if the world ends, I have enuf food/water to bunker down for a month, maybe 6 weeks if we taper calories. Once half the world is dead, then I'll attempt the trip to family/safer locals. Plus, in my neighborhood I have friends that will help set up a perimeter. Those friends are ex & current fbi, chp, 2 Marines, and Israeli army. It would be fun guarding the 2 entry points to the hood.
Roving thugs do worry me, but all my kids are able to hit "point of douche bag" at 100 yards...we would not be easy pickens. I just need to train the wife and 2yr old to do the same.
Shoot straight!Comment

I have seen kids (boys and girls) as young as 3 shooting at out local range. Cricket rifle and close parental supervision works wonders.Comment

This is awesome. I got to do something similar but not quite as good.
Every year i hike out to a waterfall/swimming hole with my friends. It takes about two hours to get there, and while not very far from the beginning of the trail, it is a pretty tough hike. the trail only goes about half way (its also narrow, and lots of ups and downs) and the rest is hiking along the river itself. Its a very rocky river so you spend almost as much time using your hands as you do your legs.
This year I decided to kick it up a notch and bring my BOB with me to test it out.
I am pretty happy with my set up, and it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. There definitely is some stuff that can go, and maybe traded with other things, but it definitely gave me a better idea of my load out than I had beforeComment

This is why my first plan is Bug In. I expect rapid failure if having to bug out on foot, even with a wagon. Bug out by car and I hope to get to my dad's place in LHC, AZ.Comment

I'm five minute or less drive to a dozen planes I can fly.

This is my plan if vehicles don't work and we have to leave or get back home from AZ. You can do 10-20 times the distance in a day vs walking. If the little ones don't have to pedal, then its even better. If you're really a hardcore prepper, you will have cached water/food along your possible routes.Comment

One of the things I learned in the Army that stuck with me and definitely applies to a SHTF scenario.
If you can sit, don't stand. If you can lie down, don't sit. If you can sleep, don't lie down.Comment

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

it just got real...ahahaa loved that game
like others have said, good job. backpacking is a decent simulator for what you can carry what you need and what its like to walk/hike with a loaded pack.
seems every time I go out, I lose weight in a hurry. burning so many calories it's not realistic to carry the weight needed in food to not lose weight. which, actually is kind of nice when conditions are normal
but long term survival, not sure how long that could be maintained....Comment
