The Northridge and SF quakes were tiny.... Just a non event.

So I was reading a magazine from www.earthquakecountry.org
And a chart stood out. It was the top 13 quakes at the time

What shocked be was that the two big CA quakes
Loma Prieata was a 7.0 and lasted 7 seconds- traveled for 40 Km
The Northridge quake was 6.7 and lasted 7 seconds and went 20 km

The Christmas quake that caused the tsunamis in Indonesia was a 9.0 that went 1,200 kilometers and lasted for........ 500 seconds....

Yup. 8 minutes and 20 seconds of continuous shaking.

I could not even imagine a roller coaster ride that lasted 8 minutes.

I am guessing the termites in my building would stop holding hands and the following minutes would eventually loosen every nail and screw in my building...

1,200 kilometers is 745 miles.... It is only 800 miles from the Tijuana border to the Oregon border....

That Indonesia quake was a doozy.

As a side note, Loma Prieta sure seemed a lot longer than 7 seconds.
I can't imagine what 8 actual minutes of earthquake would feel like but I'm betting that afterwards would probably feel like very messy underwear.

Northridge was enough to roll me out of bed and onto the floor, but I lived in a liquid faction area, outside of the zone. Dropped many overpasses, a 9.0 in the LA Basin is going to be a nightmare.

I felt both the World Series quake and the Northridge quake. I wasn't impressed with either.

Still unoccupied, taxed property today - because it is still unfit to be habitable.
After watching WTC Bldg #7 being razed, and considering it's main occupants..

I stumbled onto this note while checking advanced weapons..
"911 = false flag. WTC 7 was brought down by demolition. 47 floors came down in 6 1/2 seconds - not hit by a plane. Just one of hundreds of absurdities that occurred that day. Wake up".

Northridge was enough to bounce my 15" CRT monitor off of the desk and onto the floor... Broke the neighbors collection of elvis plates....

It got our attention.. Mountains growing by 12"-14" was an attention grabber...

I just can't imagine a quake lasting 1 full minute... let alone over 8...

Any yet... 90% of the populace have no preparation.......

My girlfriend from HS decided to come out to California and live with her sister.

In Northridge. Didn't even get unpacked.

                      She hasn't been back since.

I thought the Loma Prieta quake was 30 seconds. It certainly felt like it went on for longer than 7 seconds.

500 seconds? Must have thought it was the end of the world.

The earthquake in Alaska in 1964 was a 9.2 and lasted 4 minutes. Imagine that one in LA or the bay area.

I thought the Sylmar quake, 6.6, duration 12 seconds (64 deaths) seemed worse than the Northridge quake, 6.7, duration 8 seconds (57 deaths)
