    Copper Penny Hoarders?

Anyone hoarding copper pennies on the board?

    Any Ryedale sorters?

I've been running one for a while now. Selling locally and eBay. But I have not decided to start hoarding 100% of the copper yet.

I save them whenever I come across them. They seem a bit hard to come by, though.

Yeah, I just pick them out of my change, so... significantly smaller sample size.

When I get a cooper penny in change I keep it. Also have a few steel ones from WWII.

My sister-in-law mentioned this to me a few months back. She told me to save my pennies, so I have been, although I cannot recall the specifics as to why... What year marked the production change away from copper?

Everything 1982 and OLDER! are 95% copper. Basically, a .01 face value is worth .02 melt value (est.)

I have a machine that quickly sorts the Zinc pennies out and retains the copper. I take the Zinc pennies to a credit union that has a change machine I pour the pennies into. I then go to a few other banks and buy $100.00 of pennies. Rinse and repeat.

Once I have about 68 pounds of copper pennies I list them on eBay as 70 lbs. is the priority mail cut-off

Interesting! I really hadn't noticed the "market" for these cooper pennies until now. Seems that you have a great system. It's amazing that this hasn't been regulated by the Feds yet!

There are out there that think the fed is now pulling the copper out. Not sure how I feel about they yet.

Some 1982s are 97% zinc. I find the copper '82s by dropping them on a hard counter & listen for the distinct ringing sound.

I've also heard that nickels might be worth saving as (according to http://www.coinflation.com) they are worth 5 cents melt value.
Thanks for the reminder. I need to go visit the bank!

Its actually closer to 5.5 to 6 cents and because its value is higher than the coin itself the FED has been slowly gearng up to replace it with a new nickle but they keep postponing it. The next chedualed time to change is near the end of this year f I remeber correctly (just starpage.com it) Save all nickles now while you can.

The FEDs do take old currancy out of circulation btw but the coinage is at a much slower rate. I wouldnt put it past them though to have a sorter and recycle old ones by simply haviing old ones pulled out for melt and recast.
