Need recs: Night vision Monocular, LONG lasting AAA flashlight

    Hey All-

I am upgrading some equipment and wanted a group opinion.

    1. Nightvision. The headgear looks cool, but I really just need the monocular. Willing to spend several hundred for the right piece. Will be used in the Sierra Nevadas. Magnification doesn't matter since I won't be looking at stuff more than 100 yards away max. (mostly 40 yards or so). Any input or suggestions really appreciated. I don't know a ton about night vision.

    2. Looking for a key chain or pocket sized flashlight with the longest runtime, low lumen output is fine. Must use AAA batteries though. Yes, I know they aren't the best. But every small electronic device I have uses them so I am sticking with that battery. I already have plenty of blinding, just wanted something that will run as along as possible on a low setting maybe 10 lumens or less? Can take 1 to 4 AAA batteries. doesn't matter.

    Thanks in advance.

A couple hundred will buy you low grade Russian surplus. What is it you plan on doing with your NV? Is that your max budget? Unless its a bright moon you will need an illuminator if you plan on seeing something specific.

Check out TNVC and google GEN I II III.

One of the best night vision monoculars for under $1000 is the Armasight Spark: http://www.opticsplanet.com/armasigh...monocular.html

The Spark is one of if not the best deals in night vision right now.

CORE (Ceramic Optical Ruggedized Engine) technology image intensifier tubes! While CORE does not contain a micro channel plate (and so by definition lands in the Gen 1 category) that is where the parallels end. Instead of glass, CORE tubes use a specially formulated ceramic compound fused with metal alloys similar to those used in production of Gen 2 and Gen 3 image intensifier tubes.
While technically a Gen 1 unit, the Spark is closer to Gen 2 in quality. I read a review where the Spark was comparable to a PVS-14 with the Gain control turned all the way down.

We also sell all the accessories for the Armasight Spark, making the unit much more capable.

Streamlight Stylus 3xAAAA. Single low power led, more of a glow, enough to walk at night or find things. Not a flashlight. Red helps maintain night vision, more stealthy maybe. White led usually runs longer on a set of batts. ~50 hour burn. Comes in a larger 2xAAA version, more of a flashlight. ~8 hour burn.

I bought a Night Owl (Russian made) 5x NV Monocular from Big 5 about a year ago for night surveillance jobs. I think it works great! Has a built-in IR illuminator. Got it for $170 on sale. Not sure if this is the same one as it doesn't give the specs on magnification: http://www.big5sportinggoods.com/pro...r.html#content
They have a similar one on sale this week around $150 that is 3-6x magnification: http://www.big5sportinggoods.com/pro...monocular.html

www.dvor.com also has sweet deals on NV equipment.

Why are the guys in the last 3 pictures using that thing in daylight?

Probably because you wouldn't be able to see what the unit looks like in the dark

They could have used the same unit with the camera adapter to take the pic of the guys in the dark!

For NVD that you want to insure your life with you need to increase your budget by 8-10x. If you just want to screw around and buy something for fun waste whatever $$ you want.

Spend the coin and go with quality, I personally just ordered a TNVC PVS-14 gen 3 ITT Pinnacle.
