Nice coop, nice chickens. Don't get a rooster.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

      That's a very nice coop!

Have you thought about using construction sand instead of shavings on the floor? The sand is a million times easier to keep clean and sanitary, and I lose very little when scooping poop. I found the shavings hold moisture and funk and can really stink if you don't replace it frequently even with regular scooping. The sand is like a dream compared....

I use a dirt floor in my chicken coop.
The chicken take dirt baths anyway and I figured this would work best.

Your chickens and coop look great! Congratulations! With such a large run you could even potentially plant some pasture crops for chickens in a sectioned off area for feed if you get really inspired.

My wife has wanted chickens for years. I showed her your setup now she's convinced we need something similar.

                    Thanks toyotaguy.

Your setup was highly motivational for me.
Whenever I got discouraged at all the digging it took for the underground part of the fence I'd go sit and stare at your chicken & coop photos for a while until I got motivated to go back out and work the shovel a while longer.

That'll give you something to keep you busy for a few days. It'll be good for you. It'll keep you away from Rotten Luck Willie's saloon for a while.

Dirt is fine. The steepness of the terrain was part of the reason for building my coop up off the ground, plus we have a lot of mice & rats around so I figured a solid floor would be a good thing.
They'll have to step outside if they want a dirt bath.

The coop has been a work in progress for over a year now. I started it in early summer 2011 and got about 25% done before other problems & projects put a halt to it.
Finally this summer I had time to work on it again and finish it up.

The house has 36 square feet of floor space including the nesting boxes and it's tall enough for a human to stand up in.
The fully enclosed run covers about 500 square feet.
Hopefully it's predator proof. I spent a LOT of hours digging a trench around the perimeter and burying fence wire so the varmints can't dig under.
                            Here's the chicken palace...

                            YIPPEEEEE!!!! FINALLY GOT CHICKENS!!!!

                            I'm so effin' happy.

So here are some pics of my chicken set up.
I do not have as much footage for the chickens and may have to rectify that.
Your set up is very inspirational.

I do have a few features which make maintainence easier, such as fencing off the area directly below the roosts & rigging up drip nipples in the bottom of a water bottle.
By fencing off below the roosts you separate the chickens from the majority of their poo and since I have a door on the back wall about every 4 months or so I can scoop out the poo and mix into my compost.

You've got a nice big barn area for shelter.
How many chickens have you got? Eggs only, or meat chickens also?
