Do You Have Little Expressions To Help You Prep?

Simple question: Do you have little expressions which remind you to prep or help you in prepping?

What do I mean? Here's a short list...
    • It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.
    • Two is one and one is none.
    • If you put it off until tomorrow, what if tomorrow is the day it's needed?
    You get the idea.

Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.

I’m up, he sees me, I’m down.

        “Leave nothing to chance”
This mantra has worked well for me in many areas of my life besides prepping.

They MUST bring something to the party. I’m currently in the market for a MD doctor neighbor. We have most everything else covered.

why put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

Nothing goes to waste. Re-use; re-purpose.

I can't take credit for either of my offerings. The first, in a prior post, came from my dad, who used it during the war, along with his bible and rosary. The above was from my mom, growing up in a Depression era farm family which had escaped the Communists. I keep a peanut butter jar of nails she straightened as a reminder, along with a much larger plastic pail of bent nails I still have to process.

You take advantage of the opportunity to lift them up.

Figure out what their needs are and then do what you can, in a measured way, to help. Along the way, you’ll have a golden opportunity to share with them, a view of the world they’ve never considered before. After the crisis passes, they’ll remember their suffering in contrast to your kindness and will likely be eager to learn more from you.

I’ve admired the prepared folks in the Carolinas that have reached out to their less prepared neighbors with offers of ice or water from their well, or perhaps a hot shower or other comfort in aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Do what you can and what is reasonable to be a blessing to others in a crisis. Regardless of how prepared you think you are, you may one day find yourself at the receiving end.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

                        "prepping is not just stuff."

Excellent condensing of something I wrote in a post in another thread down the page, lessons learned from Helene. Thanks. 👍

I'm also incorporating some distractions into survival prep, aka 'fun'. Music, games, play. I know survival is serious business but there are a lot of hours in the day, particularly when one is well-prepared and trained. Maintaining morale is important.

One of the reasons I started this thread is how quite a few expressions mean different things to different people in different circumstances.

The expression - Knowledge doesn't take up space and is lightweight. - is representative of that.

For some, knowledge is simply what is known. To someone preparing, it goes deeper than that and includes analysis of theory vs. practice. As an example: knowing how to build something, in theory, is one thing. Knowing how to build something, but not having all the 'correct' parts and still getting it constructed, not to mention working, is a different matter.

I've done so much with so little for so long there are days I feel I can do everything with nothing.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Today I was using the jump pack to test 12 volt stuff from an RV I stripped over 30 years ago. The water pump will become a backup for a backup. That just reminded me I have four big halogen lights in the old race car walk in box that run on 12 volts too.

Yeah, more nothing to make something out of. I built that box when I was 18 and built a trailer for my race car. Car and trailer are long gone but I kept the box. There's a bunch of electrical in it for fans, lighting, winch, etc. I strapped it to the new trailer when hauling cars and the tractor to Oregon and filled it with stuff. Nothing goes to waste 👍
