Canned goods past expiration date

In 1970 I was still eating c rats from WW2 , still kicking today. On the other hand I found some dead mice today, they had eaten a couple of my datrex boat survival bars. Those things look and taste like sawdust mixed with concrete, bet thats what killed them off and they were way past their by date
