Tropical Storm Hillary before and after

It will be interesting to see what tropical storm Hillary will bring to Southern California and the southern central valley on Sunday. For the readers of this forum, preparing for the large amount of rain predicted to fall in a very short period of time, should be not much more than checking the generator and maybe taking down the umbrella from the patio table.

Folks living on hillsides or in the potential path of canyon debris flows may have other issues than just a power outage. It's noteworthy that one year ago, Death Valley received substantial flood damage after about an inch and half of rain fell. What will several inches do this time around?

If you've got a before or after storm story, post it here!

I'm calling this will be a nothing burger for LA/ South Bay. At least by my shop in West la, the homeless poop and needles will get washed away.

Then all the filth and trash from the Hobos plugs the storm drains which causes flooding and more pot holes.

Not much to do around here. I may need to add another French drain. Three neighbors uphill from us have added a large paved surface and two adu’s. A lot more runoff seemed to hit my place than in years past. Not happy but should be an easy fix.

My wife picked a wonderful time to have the house re-roofed. I'm more concerned about the wind though.

I?m blowing leaves off of roofs and cleaning rain gutters and cranking down the umbrellas.
Otherwise, we have been dry so on ground saturation to worry about, and the winds will be less than the storms this winter.
I?ll disconnect my Amateur radios from their antennas just in case of lightening, even though they are all grounded.

I’m gonna wash my hair and rearrange my sock drawer tomorrow night about the same time the tropical depression comes ashore. I’ll let you guys know how it goes.

Stumbled on the following regarding the last hurricane that made it up here:

The last tropical storm to hit our area was 1939. Long Beach was the center of the storm with winds just under hurricane strength. My late mother and one of our late former employees remembered it. Weather records indicate about 5" of rain fell in the cities and 11" in the mountains September 25, 1939. I met a retired district water manager in the 1970's who told me that the Santa Ana river in the follwing days was carrying the flow that is average for the Mississippi river...essentially covering half of our county. Nearly 100 people died, 45 on land.

Our Prado Dam was finished in 1941 in response to the flood. Hopefully it performs as planned.

Prepare for lots of sustained high winds as well as the rain. If you have a basement stairwell with a drain, clear out all the leaves or you will have a small pool waiting to let go into the basement/walk out.

Have some battery lights and lanterns available and confirmed working.

Prepare for power outages, downed trees, and maybe a couple days at home.

I hope it is not a big deal. I have been through plenty and some are just wind, some are just rain, and others are...intense. Good luck to you all and see you on the other side.

Agree - predicted on Thursday it would move eastward, closer to Arizona side of CA.

What remains will likely just be a good amount of rain, no high winds, nothing different from what we saw earlier this year.

At least Newsom is 'on' it as Southern California 'scrambles' to prepare... Gov. Newsom declares state of emergency for southern California ahead of historic Hurricane Hilary

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday proclaimed a state of emergency Saturday for a large portion of Southern California, as the state prepares for a historic hurricane expected to cause extreme rain and flooding.

There are "more than 7,500 boots on the ground" already deployed to help protect from the impact of Hurricane Hilary, according to the release from his office.

"Today, Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency for much of Southern California to support Hurricane Hilary response and recovery efforts as the state continues mobilizing and coordinating resources ahead of the storm's forecasted impacts starting today," the release read...
Which naturally leads the conspiracy theorists to explore what Newsom is 'really' up to using Hilary as a 'cover.'

Oh... No small amount of irony lost in that allusion.

Oh look at how juicy this nothing burger has become.

I?ve had more flavor from unsalted crackers and water?
