My son texted me asking about MRE's. He has a small family in San Diego and said he wants to make an emergency kit with some MRE's. So Calgun preppers, where is best place to buy new (not three year old stuff)?

MRE, where to buy?

Sailed once with a few MRE's as my primary food source and won't do that again; the shelf life isn't there for the price point IMO. I think your preps would better included bagged patriot supply / mountain house staples.1. Compared to what?
2. At what cost?
3. What hard evidence do you have?

Sopaco, Wornick and Ameriqual are the three companies that manufacture/package MREs for the military. The last time I checked, they had civilian versions that could be purchased by the 12-pack.--Magazines for Sig Sauer P6

Some sporting goods stores have Mountain House meals in plain sight.

I have gotten bag o grub from these guys and never disappointed.
You can a-la-cart the entrees and pretty much anything else you like. That's a handy feature when you have picky eaters on board. It ain't like you have to order only off the military menu. Just order more of what you end up liking.
*complete meals are bulky so we break'em down for camping/treking purposes. A-la-cart makes that easy peasy.Last edited by FeuerFrei; 07-16-2022, 5:18 PM.Comment

I have several cases of the Sopakco "military-style" MREs. These are the ones they sell to civilians. They include much of what's in the true military versions but don't have the candy (it's crap anyway), hot sauce, and some other smaller items. I swear the portion sizes are smaller compared to what I had in the Army. But I may be wrong on the portion sizes. They just seem smaller than what I remember from ten years ago.

Major Surplus sells civilian MREs in various levels of completeness. But as mentioned, the shelf life is a few years, unless he is planning on rotating them out regularly, they are not a great choice for long term and forget it planning. Freeze dried food like mountain house or other places like https://mypatriotsupply.com have a 25 year shelf life.Comment

Have to agree with others that mentioned the shelf life. We have some MREs still in storage and at this point I would rather have freeze dried replace what little we have.
We still have a good supply of survival buckets and other freeze dried food staples as well but the storage requirements as well will help him decide.NRA Life Member
