You can easily find food grade blue barrels on Craigslist for $5-10. They're usually used for syrup or dental chemicals, so I rinse, add a cap or 2 of bleach, let stand for 24 hours, rinse again and fill with clean water. If you want to make sure the water doesn't grow mold, add 1 drop of bleach per gallon, then store in the shade.
