        Ha...that stuff may be good to know for hiking, especially off trail. Guess a clue would be irrigation equipment in the middle of nowhere. Safety hazard identification.

          I had a brother in law that was US Army air cav and was part of an artillery battery of 155 towed howitzers and he stayed inside the wire at whatever fire support base they were assigned to. He had stories galore.

          He said the patrols that came back would talk of "toe poppers" and "foot traps". Rarely deadly, but always slowed them down by having to pick their way along. Choppers would have to come in and fly out the wounded.

          Side note;
          I went to school with a man that lived in Laos with his family in the 70's. He and his father and brother fought the ChiCom, Laos, VN and Cambodian varieties along side many other Hmong.

          He said their favorite weapon was a hand grenade. So many different uses and booby trapping was the big one. Simple piece of string, grenade with the pin out and spoon depressed by the right size piece of bamboo to stuff it in. String pulls the grenade out and surprise!

          *His father and brother both died fighting Coms.
