I had a lot of fun in martial arts (Tang Soo Do) and the sparring was great. One of our masters instructors also taught situations on Fridays and Saturdays such as versing an armed opponent (guns, knives, etc), getting out of locks, and sparring in street clothes.

Unfortunately I recently moved so I got to find something else. (If anyone has a good recommendation for the Grass Valley area PM me) Right now I just do kickboxing in the garage and weights. And thats mostly so I can keep limber for mountain biking and rock climbing.

I will say even if your go to routine is to use a firearm, the fine motors skills you get from moves and sparring really do help at the range...and especially when you have an adrenaline rush. Also the cardio and different strain you place on muscles and ligaments alone is worth the time.

There are some martial arts that teach you things you can use in a real fight, but many don't. If you try some flying crane bull**** on me your going to get your larynx crushed, your knee taken out, and your eye socket caved in.

Unfortunately the only way to really prepare for a fight is to get in a lot of them. You can join a boxing/MMA gym and study a martial art that allows full contact full speed sparring to learn, but then you have to take it out on the street to prove it. I wish there was another way, but until you've been in a real fight you'll never know how you'll perform in a real fight.

Even carrying a gun is not a sure thing, most criminals will approach you in a way that makes it difficult to draw, and when they attack (assuming they are good at their trade) it will be blinding fast and overwhelmingly violent.

          Truth.

The last thing i want to do is to draw a firearm.

Thumbs into an eye socket are very effective.

My wife would flip out if I randomly attacked her--but that does sound tempting.....hmmmm.

"Everyone's got a plan 'til they get punched in the face" --Mike Tyson.
If you haven't learned to fight against someone actually trying to punch you in the face: boxing, muay thai, some but not most jiu jitsu, you are unprepared to survive if things go bad. A skilled fighter can punch you in the face a lot faster than most can deploy a concealed pistol.

If you're going to invest time, energy, money into a martial art, go with a combative system.

I trained traditional Kung Fu when I was a kid (Shaolin, Wushu) and explored Wing Chun shortly after.

Being Filipino, I was around Escrima/Kali a lot, and I'm proficient with a stick and edged weapon.

I focused predominantly on Jeet Kune Do and followed the combative system of Dan Inosanto and Paul Vunak.

Paul Vunak knows real fighting. He caught some flak from others in the JKD community for personal/business issues, but the man knows his stuff, especially when it comes to fighting with/against knives, which is the Achilles heel of all traditional martial arts disciplines.

Read up on him and Progressive Fighting System.

                          That's real-world combative/self-defense fighting...

Fitness and conditioning are good but you must train if you want to be effective. There are people on YouTube that knock their opponents out even though they aren't trained but I wouldn't count on it.
