I concede and bow down to your superior manitude. No matter how many doses of hgh, steroids, and specialized stem cells I don't think I could ever shoulder a 2.5 ton rifle.
We'll just give them the 'ol number 6.Comment

OP said
Semi-Auto is the preference of the OP, who are we to say "Nay"?So.....Id like a powerful semi auto that can pump large amounts of lead into this creature. Price is not a real consideration.....kinda, but not really.
I like the 458 SOCOM; big, heavy round with plenty of energy and penetration. It's limited on range, <200 yards. Get an upper and slap it on your AR Lower and it's off to the range. Buying rounds is problematic - you'll need to roll your own or have someone else do it for you. 10rds in a standard AR mag.
The 45-70 uses the same bullet, 0.458, and rounds are more available.
Who shooting? OP or OP's Dad?
What do you have now?I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.

As a generalization 95% of the people asking these types of questions here on calgay have never hunted before, read sterotypes and other bull**** from "other hunters" and "friends who hunt" about how a quick follow up shot is needed, read magazines thinking black bears are deadier than polar bears in heat, etc.
When people ask newbie type questions in here I assume they are and therefore give them advice based upon 2 plus decades that I've been shooting animals. If it's something I know nothing about I have no problem not posting but I try to help where I can..Originally posted by jmonte35Disagree. Been trying to teach lewdogg21 how to hunt. It's like trying to teach Steve Wonder how to see. Not sure we're ever going to get there.Comment

You could spend 1500 of your Dad's dollars on an M-14 or you can buy a $200.00 12 gauge pump and load it with slugs. If it were me, I'd use my 30-06. You aren't preparing for war, you are trying to kill a black bear, likely not over a 300 lb. animal.Comment

Well, that would work OK I guess....... as long as you had a sidearm handy for your Finishing Move.
OP - go to Big 5, but a Savage Axis for $350, a box of ammo, zero it, and then shoot the damn bear. You'll probably have 10 rounds left over when all is done, and then maybe I'll buy the Savage from you if you don't want it any more.
Or - you could buy my sporter Mauser in 8mm that I have for sale, and I'll toss in a box of ammo for free.
Or - you could invite me up, I'll shoot the damn bear with my Tikka, and you can buy me dinner and fill my gas tank as payment.

I think a Lever Rifle would be easier to use and to find, along with ammunition, whatever caliber OP ends up with. Stick with iron sights and you're done.
We still don't know who's doing the shooting, but I'm supposing OP's Dad. Aren't those permits only for the Landowner unless they designate someone as their agent?I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.

for a 1-time use, get a mossberg 500 and load it with good slugs. $400, all in. tax, ammo, everything.
big 5 has them on sale right now.
a good, big-bore semi will cost much, much more.
there are a lot of us who will kill that thing for you, ya know, for free.Last edited by God Bless America; 02-03-2015, 11:47 PM.Comment

I agree. Does the OP even know where to place the shot to put down a bear or any similar size animal with one shot for a clean kill? Does he feel a semi-auto will compensate for that?
30-06....learn how to shoot it first.

A Bowie knife in each hand would be totally baller.......
Just get a cheap 12 guage pump and some decent slugs. Or spend several hundred dollars on some instant jesus rifle that will kill rhinos, hippos and elephants with one marginal shot. I'm thinking you should take out a second mortgage and buy a really high quality double rifle in 500 Nitro Express.
It's just a black bear. Shoot it in the right place and you won't need to spray rounds at it.My mother always told me to be careful what you ask for.
Just one more piece of parental advice I stupidly ignored.
