faris, let me put it this way. yes you can legaly hunt big game in california with that puny caliber but an ethical hunter is not likely to take you along if you choose to.

I agree with Poor Richard, a .223 will work but shot placement is critical and IMHO a shot longer than 200 yards would be unethical. Relying on fast follow up shots is not as important or as practical as putting the 1st bullet in the right place. A bolt gun in a proper deer caliber will be more comfortable to carry, likely have better accuracy and kill more efficiently and humanely than a .223 caliber AR.

It is very easy to upgrade a AR .223/556 to a WSSM and have plenty of power for your hunt!

Thanks for your service OP. You can hunt big game up to deer with an AR. A well placed shot will get it done. Post pics when you tag one, it really gets the purists' panties in a bunch.

OP hopefuly you hang around the hunting forum and also try and network as much as you can at work,your mil buddys, church, facebook or wherever. There are hunting oppurtuntys out there just takes some work and time to figure them out. Deer is not the best thing to hunt in this state too many people not enough deer. Turkey season will be here in 7 weeks that might be able something to start out on here.
