Shotgun for turkey, birds. ar15 for anything from rabbit to deer.

Curious, when you attended the hunter safety coarse to take your test did you mention you wanted to use an ar15 to hunt and if so what did the instructor(s) say?

When I took the class the instructor encouraged using ar15. He said why not? Its accurate, and you get fast follow up ahot if you need it. Hunters in the past used the best rifles they could get, if the best was a musket at the time they used musket, if it was a sharps, thats what they used, .223 will take down deer with good shot placement like any other caliber

I find it hard to believe a good instructor would tell a new hunter that a 5.56 or 223 is good to hunt deer with. Good shot placement comes from experience hunting game. Most new hunters end up with buck fever and can't take a good shot even when the deer is broadside at 50 yards.

A rifle shooting 223 is a poor choice for deer when other options suitable for deer are available. If its all you have, you shouldn't be hunting. Hunting is not a cheap sport but a good bolt gun is not expensive in a suitable round, used.

Can you guys school me about if I can hunt with my AR15 (5.56).

I thinking about going turkey hunting in north California (Sacramento) but I don't know anyone to go hunting with.

I used to hunt in Iraq (mother country) for pheasant and doves.
Came to United States in 2009 after working as a linguist contractor for the US army....Shot by sniper during a dismounted patrol in 2006 in Iraq-Ramadi.

                    Thanks
Just curious, what unit were you attached to?

I teach Hunter's Ed. When questioned about the use of 5.56/.223, I encourage future hunters to use thier AR15s for coyotes and jacks (head shots are best on the wabbits as it cuts down on meat damage), but try to dissuade the use of .223 for deer or pigs- I agree with taper- just not enough power IMO. If you decide to use it for big game, you better have damn good shot placement.

I also bring up ethics and the use of semi-auto guns while hunting. I explain that while legal, it is in no way ethical to rattle off ten rounds at an animal while hunting. I encourage them to load no more than 5 rounds in thier magazine, and if possible obtain and use a five round magazine as opposed to a ten rounder for the purposes of hunting.

Wow. The way some people treat newer or less experienced/ knowledgeable people on here, it is little wonder some people see the gun crowd in such a negative light. Give the guy a break. Answer his question. Is it that hard to refrain from being a jerk?
