My guide laughed he's butt off last year when I took a cow elk at 257 yards using a 300 WSM. She was being helped over a fence by a bull at the time. Certainly one of my more memorable shots.

Most mule deer: between 125-200 yards.
      My Ca. antelope: 225-240yards.
I used to play aLOT of golf, so yardage isn't that difficult to figure.
Owens Valley/Round Valley coyotes: All kinds of different ranges: 20 yards out to real close to 400yards. Either an .22-250 or .25-06. Usually the .22-250.

I always practice for the long shot But when it comes time to punch a tag the Deer and Pigs have always been in close. Ive only shot one large animal out passed 60 yds! My nearest shot was at only 10 paces. I had gotten ahead of my dad and sat down to wait and this Buck walked right up to me. He must not have seen me because he was looking around a lot. I waited till his head was turned back and I shot him dead center of his chest. Thats one Ill never forget! DR

The poll results are showing some interesting trends for 200-300 yards, I'll need to correlate and reconcile some of the responders to this thread that have reported distances that may not match exactly between posts and the poll tally.

I've killed 8 dear, ranges from 25 yards -350 yards. Longest and shortest were with 7mm Rem Mag. I've also killed dear with .308 and 30-06. Regardless of caliber all of the dear seemed equally dead.

A lot of people probably didn't pick a distance in the poll because you only get one choice and they have multiple animals. Other people may have picked a distance but not posted.

Can't see the poll on my iPod, but my furthest kill, according to the rangefinder, was a small buck at 424 yards. DRT with a 155 grain Winchester Silvertip out of my pre-Accutrigger 10FPLE2.

I would never recommend anything so extreme. I'll leave it to the reader if adding something that launches rounds that are "slow and heavy" (at least compared to .30 magnums) is appropriate based on the findings. Fast and furious is something of a uniquely American fetish and I wouldn't presume that is going to change anytime soon.

The only suggestion I can make, given the limitations of the polling system, are to take the poll as many times as you have tagged critters to account for. It will certainly save me some time.

So I've heard. I doubt wherever those deer go in the afterlife they spend much time debating which "hurt" more on their way to the pearly gates.

For our purposes, I'm interested in where we end up with average and maximum distances, though the data is already showing significant trends that might define what we consider short, medium and long range.
