I'm assuming this is a continuation of your 358 winchester thread. The issue brought up in that thread was not the average distance most game is taken from, but the out of average scenarios. Sure, most game is taken under 200 yards by a large margin, but if you hunt enough you will have opportunities to take game beyond 200 yards. The terrain you hunt obviously has much to do with this, but out here in the west we have pleanty of wide open spaces for spotting game at distance. I have been on several hunts where game was spottted at a considerable distance and a stalk to get within 200 yards was just not possible without spooking the game. In these scenarios, a cartridge that lets you shoot out to 300-500 yards can mean the difference of going home succesful or not. Your poll is going to show you that. After you have spent an entire season hunting or dropped thousands of dollars on a hunt and you see a trophy animal or the only animal of your hunt at 450 yards, you will be dissapointed that you brought your 358 instead of your 270 or 300 winmag.

The most impressive shot I have seen was by the guy who does hog eradication for the state of CA. We were after a boar spotted in a large flat and we suddenly spotted him as we were riding our quads. He jumped off of his moving quad, quickly ranged the running boar going straight away from us and made a perfect shot off hand at 550 yards with his 300 ultra mag. It was incredible and he made it look easy, but he kills stuff for a living. I do know that he could not have done it with a 30-30 or 358 winchester, which is why he didn't carry one.

You lose nothing by shooting a 270 over a 358 winchester, but have everything to gain.

Off the top of my head over the last 3 seasons

                    3 pigs 220-300 yards - 204 ruger
                    1 pig 10 yards -243wssm
                    1 deer 100 yards - 25-06
                    1 deer 75 yards - 204 ruger
several coyotes at varying distances from 50 yards out to 400 - 25-06, 204, 223

My furthest shot on game is about 500 yards, but not over the last 3 seasons.

All Animals taken at distances I can estimate without the use of a rangefinder so most within 400 yrds all one shot kills, calibers range from 22-250 to 30-06 would I shoot further? no need.

I think I was there for the zero yards....use your imagination. I believe he strangled it....with his bare hands like a real man. I haven't killed anything past 200 yards, and wouldn't even try past 300 yards, because that's as far as I can hit stuff confidently. If I can, I stalk under 100 yards. While scouting last weekend, I stalked a deer within 15 yards, and watched him for 10 minutes, and he never saw me. 30-06, 308, 223, 22lr, air rifles, shotgun. Every rifle I have has tasted blood, and some of my handguns.

Something to keep in mind for your poll is that many people, especially the inexperienced, have a hard time accurately estimating yardage past 150-200 yards. Unless the yardage being posted was ranged with a range finder, it might as well be measured as long, medium, or short distance IMO. Some people are very good at ranging distance with their eye, but IME they are the exception.
