I had planned on Vandenberg AFB, but my military friend is such a flake, I minus well forget about it. Where can I go where I have a decent chance of nailing a pig w/o needing to join the military or pay for an expensive guided pig hunt? Thanks

Here is a guide from 2004. Sure, its not current to this year, but there is some great information provided.

You can find wild pig North of Santa Barbara on Public land in teh Los Padres National Forrest. Look for Oak trees and water. Pigs won't be far away.Comment

Pigs are open all year.
On camp roberts the hunting dates are SEPT to JAN. The rest of the state for public land is all year.Comment

I use to "not" shoot pig NE of King City on BLM land. A buddy and I use to go during Deer season (zone A IIRC) and always had pig tags with us. No success, but we saw plenty of deer and pig. Mostly on the private land throughout that area, but they are also on the BLM land. Also saw lots of turkey. We use to camp at the RV park in King City right off the 101 hwy.
Good luck.
Get a BLM map of the below area.

If you want a guarantee, you have to pay. Unfortunately, thats how it is. You can try public areas over and over and get mixed results...and even get lucky. Best bet for your first pig is to try one of the private setups that are advertised in Raahauge's or Turner's...They can be somewhat pricey, and its not 'real' hunting, but its pretty much guaranteed unless you can't shoot straight.
If you want the real hunting experience, you have to work for it...Best advice is to go with someone who knows the area. There are alot of pigs in the wild in CA...tons...you just have to keep on top of where they are -- and they do tend to like private land. All of my kills have been on private land around the Paso area...It seems they like the wine grapes.Comment

Private
I'd suggest for your first time anyways that you pay. There's a lot to learn about hunting pigs that you'll gain if you actually get to see them...like for instance, most people don't realize that they prefer to walk on their 2 hind legs when walking through water, so you'll have a harder time tracking them when them come out of the water. Or the really odd thing about them isn't that they usually speak Romanian, but that they've never even been to Europe...but I digress..
I've hunted on Ft. Hnter-Lgt and areas around there, with no luck. I've hunted on private property (paid/guided) in that same area and was 100% on several hunts (see above post from CRS-1, who has learned more from me about hunting than can be learned from twelve Indian Chiefs). I've also had 100% success on Private property (free) in the central valley (near Mariposa). I know of friends who have had great success in the Northern Part of this great state of ours as well - in the Redding area and west to the coast.
But if you just want to have fun and put some tasty meat in your freezer, try one of the "High-Fence" hunts that CRS-1 Mentioned above. He and I did one last year with some other buddies and He was able to get close enough to take a squeeler with a bow...(even though it had to taste hot lead before it could enter into 'Allah's Special Place for True Believers")(so no 'pope and young' for CRSSY-Boy). The deal with these hunts are: They're fun, they're usually closer for us idiots who live in SoCal, and they're more cost effective than a low-fence guided hunt w/trophey fee.
So you have 3 choices:
1) Learn Romanian,
2)Pay for guidance,
3)Swing for the Fences (high)
mmmm, Pork, its whats for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner...Comment
