I built an AR in 6.8SPC.
    Basically a .270 just a bit slower.
If you don't have a rifle, an AR platform is a good start, since you can change uppers to accommodate anything from .22-.458 if you so desire.
What sold me was watching a YouTube video of a guy with night vision, drop hog after hog with copper ammo doing pest control.

      30-06 or 300 win mag

It really depends on how your hunting and at what range. Most people will shoot within 200 yards. So shot placement shouldn’t be a problem. I personally shoot my 30-378 weatherby. Not because I need to but because I need the experience with the gun for hunting bigger game at farther ranges. I am very effective out to 800 yards with that rifle.

Start with caliber: Anything .270 and up is sufficient and will work for just about anything in N. America

Lots of good bolt action rifles available in price point. Spend a fair amount for good glass.

Find a rifle that fits, you like the feel of the bolt, safety feels natural and an adjustable trigger.

More than once, I have found someone else's bullet in a pig I was cleaning. Best to stick with a caliber that gives you the best odds on larger pigs. 30-06 and .308 would be my choices in California due to unavailability of lead free ammo in most calibers.

As all the responses above indicate, there is a wide range of guns that will work well on pigs. How you're hunting & what range will narrow the scope a bit. A 30-06 (I love my Tikka T3 Lite) will cover any scenario on pigs and also any mammal native to North America. There's something cool about a 45-70 - but that really is overkill for pigs.

It don't disagree with you at all. Shot placement is everything. I too have killed pigs/deer with a .223. The problem is that sometimes things happen...the pig moves as you squeeze the trigger, you elect to shoot it on the run, etc. The OP is obviously a new hunter. The advice I gave was intended to give him the best choice considering his novice status and the lack of available copper ammo in California.

As a side note, sometimes I use my AR in 6.8SPC. Does that mean I sit down to pee? You know, you must still be pretty young. Because at my age it takes so long to get the pee flow going you may as well sit down and get comfortable.

6.8 is cool. Haha.. my point is a 308 gut shot pig runs just as far as a 223 gut shot.

I just use a savage 110. it was a 30-06 but converted to 308. its more than enough to put down a boar. You dont freaking need a 300 win mag. A 308 will eff it up enough.

Before the Savage I used to use a Yugo SKS for both deer and boar.. Worked great for that. And its a light rifle to carry and ammo is relatively cheap too.. Remove the bayonet its just weight you don’t need. I switched to 308 cause you have to use copper ammo now and I couldn’t reload SKS ammo. But i bought all copper 223 and 308 bullets.
Last boar i shot with a 308 really took a big part of the shoulder off. This was in Texas. I no longer waste my time hunting California for bigger game. Once in a while I go quail or dove.

Thank you all for the suggestion. I bought Winchester XPR Hunter Bolt-Action Rifle with Scope in TrueTimber Strata from bass pro. I will let you know once I try out in shooting range.

You don't hunt, so nobody cares about what you have to say. Can I still trespass on your little corner of dirt?
