    Suggestion for hog hunting rifle

I have great opportunity to hunt hogs at a friend's farm for a long time and need to buy a rifle soon.

Any suggestion for the price around $1k? I have been hunting waterfowls in last 5 years and own couple of shotguns but never owned a rifle.

    Thanks in advance.

Caliber would be 1st choice, rifle second.

Or, just buy a Savage Axis in .308 and be happy.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

what about Semi-auto rifle like Browning Bar Mark III? I feel semi-auto can allow me to shot more than once if I miss the first shot.

Bolt action rifles tend to have better triggers and as a result have better accuracy. If you make a good hit with the first shot, follow up shots become less important.
Have you scouted the area you’ll be hunting? What distance do you expect to be shooting?

bigbossman has it right. Or a 308win in a Ruger American. Or Tikka T-3 Lite.
Put a Leupold 3.5X10X40 scope with a duplex reticle on it sighted 2.75" high at 100 yards and hold on the animal.
I suggest 130 or 150gr(no heavier) Barnes TTSX bullets.
              The Claw Sling is excellent

.308 with a lightweight sporter barrel. The kind of gun you want to carry alot and shoot little.

Ruger American or Savage hog hunter 11/110 family. Bolt action rifle in .308.
Life was simpler, and more honest, when revolvers and lever actions were the rule.

I'd probably go with a .44mag levergun for brushy areas and open it up a bit to a .308 for more open areas.

With a little practice, you should be fast enough with a bolt action. You really don't need a semi-auto. Ducks...sure, pigs.....not so much.

I would advise against this in California. Unless you are a reloader, it will be difficult to find any lead free ammo in these calibers. Stick with a common hunting caliber.

Never having been on a hog hunt, my thinking is SKS, AK or mini-30 would be good choices. Most of them aren’t very big animals but the can be quite vicious. 30-30 lever gun would be a good choice as well.
