personally i wouldnt take a trip out of la county for tuna. your best bet would be taking an overnight to two day trip out of san diego, dana point, and newport in that order. right now the tuna are simply way out of the 3/4 range as they should be around the 1010 and butterfly region. they generally stay in these areas until june or so when they start moving in a little closer to the islands.

if you wait until late july/august the water may warm up and we might see some local yft. they are occasionally show up in the 1/2-3/4 day range with best bets once again at the harbors listed above. it just depends on how the water warms up if we get clean water in the high 70's and low 80's get out there asap.

if you dont feel like taking those trips catalina always has bonito. oh watch the counts closely speaking of bonita there have been a few of the larger models chewing off the 14mile up to 19lbs.

Bonita are starting to run pretty good off of Catalina island right now with a few yellowtail popping up.

for the most part yes, i would call the landing and check prior sometimes they switch to local fishing if the fishing has been decent.

Here's a site I frequent that lists all the landings and the daily fish counts. http://www.biteson.com/newlandings.html

Sundays normally are a little less crowded. In another month the fishing will be wide open for barracuda, bonita, yellowtail etc.

I have fished off the Los Alamitos Jetty the past couple weeks and nailed some short halibut and a short Calico bass. Cheaper than going on the boats, but not as productive.....fun still. I use baitcasters and 1/4 or 3/8 oz leadheads with 3" to 4" plastic swimbaits on 6 lb line. I plan on getting my annual license and fishing the surf some too.

Sounds like fun. Maybe I can meet you down there sometime when I have a free weekend. They are few and far between but they do exist.
