I'm using an 8wt to chuck streamers in Alaska for silver salmon.

Chuck it out, strip it back in. I need distance.

I found the best way to fly fish is to throw some c4 with a detonator at the fly. Give is a minute or so to sing and boom, scoop up the fish with a net.

You need to break out the two handed spey rod for that situation.

I actually caught a few salmon with a fly rod last year, after I got the streamer out of my ear

              You need a spinning rod.

When I do the haul I create a tailing loop, and it crashes into the rod tip. Any ideas?

Try starting with a single haul and once you have that perfected add in the double

Wait until the line finishes in your back cast. If it makes the whip crack you are forward casting too soon.

I had my boys on fly rods by 9.

That's awesome for them, they have a great dad... We learned on a Zebco spincast... but I caught a bigazz trout in June Lake when I was 6 with it.

When we were growing up being able to head down to the lake/pond with a spinning rig and a bobber was great fun, I didn't cast a fly until I was in my 20's.

Look up info for the Long Beach club. The days the have fly tying class there is always somewhere early to help people with their casting. The casting pond also helps load the rods better.

Another option, if you can find the right rod line combo, go one, possible two weights heavier to load the load more, once you get a better feel, the double haul is just a matter of timing and practice.

It was great never having to clean up rats nests again. It meant I could actually fish too.
