Any of you fly fisherman use the double-haul?

I took a casting class from Bob Marriott's fly fishing store in Fullerton. It was four weeks, but I missed week one and three.

This past Saturday was the double-haul. It's kinda like rubbing your belly, and patting your head. The instructor make it look so easy.

    It isn't.

It is pretty easy and very useful with heavier lines and windier days. It shouldn't take much to get the hang of it. By the way, remember to duck when that 1/0 bead head weighted salmon fly goes whizzing by your ear with a crosswind pushing it.

          Agreed on all accounts.

I accidentally pierced my ear double hauling a big fly when I was in my teens.

Came close a few times myself. Stuck one in my collar once and took my hat off once too. I guy I knew stuck a 2/0 Lefty's Deceiver in his skull while Striper fishing in the SF bay. It was stuck so bad the ER doctor had to borrow my buddy's pliers to remove it. Hemostats were too flimsy to get the job done.

You think I tipped him? You funny guy Joe.

There were 10 of us in the class, at 25 bucks each (per session). If he's not making enough money, he needs to talk to his employer, not me.

Some but for what i fly fish for it would be rare.

Another way to deal with wind in your face when trying to cast is "up casting" i call it.

Don't know if it's already a thing or if i invented it but i do know no one ever taught me.

Rather than take line up off the water and back cast you cast your loop straight up and time it laying out behind you with the wind to make your cast.

That's my go to cast besides roll casting for getting under trees over hanging on the water.

A lot of fly fishermen cast more than they fish. Double haul is useful develop a solid basic cast and go from there.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

Once you understand the concept of "loading the rod" then all variants of the cast become clearer (easier).
