    Wild Hog Yield

Since this place is all about fishing, I want to know what % yield off a wild hog/boar/pig should I expect.

    Ready go!

Well it depends on which part of Portland your hunting!
We'll just give them the 'ol number 6.

In my younger days my yield for hogs at the bar was about 50% overall. Strangely though the bigger the hog the higher percentage of success, especially later in the evening when most of the better hogs have been picked over. The leaner the hog the success percentage would drop significantly. If I was hunting with my friends I would target the leaner hogs and success rates were significantly lower. Hunting alone, I was much less selective and would harvest much less desirable, more hairy or even defecective hogs. You have to be very careful with these hogs as they were prone to carry disease and parisites.

Big boat stopper derived an algorithm to determine this. The information was kept by the Scholars of Swineshire, but unfortunately the information was lost when a cal gunner started a brush fire while shooting and the documents were torched...

I think a book and Movie by Clint Eastwood was done about that. Wasn't it called "The Hogs of San Benito County"?

I realize this is a joke thread, but just to interject an answer... :-)

My wife's 140lb hog and my 180lb hog (on the hoof) both yielded slightly above 40% of that mass in edible, boned meat.

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

if you REALLY want me to be anal, I should speak in lbs-MASS and lbs-FORCE for mass and weight.

I'll admit, I had to look that up.

I train electrons for a living. Stuff that you can touch scares me. :-)

I think that is a question for David Hogg.

Hey Shay I think it was about yield of meat percentage of live weight. I know it is cheaper to buy pork than the fee for processing if you have sausage done. Especially at Green Acres in Simi Valley.

Trying to save money on food by hunting it yourself is as wrong as thinking you will save money by reloading. The meat will cost you more per pound if you add up all expenses and you will spend as much or more reloading but you will shoot more.

You hunt because you enjoy and want to. You may also like the meat when you get the animal shot. You hunt for the experience and often being with friends. You will never save money over buying meat at the store.

A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Sorry but in reality hogs are at best serviceable. Id never eat one until i knew where it had been. Just saying

The only way to save cash hunting is if you already own/ have free access to rich private land. Helps a lot if you like rabbit.
