First muley buck of the season. A little bit of a cheater as I recently got permission to hunt a farm that borders BLM. I was out a few days ago and saw tracks on a road separating BLM from an alfalfa field. I set up in the alfalfa field being a set of pivot wheels. He walked in and finally turned broadside at 50 yards. This is a shortrange weapons unit so I took him with a savage 220 20ga bolt shotgun.
May be the biggest bodied deer I've taken. I'm thinking small antler growth due to a combination of things, including drought. And, a huge amount of fat on him.

Couldn't even get it fully off the ground using 8' ladders and a 4x4.

That snow storm was all it took to get my first buck on my first trip this year. Well, also 7 seasons of no success, lots of disappointment, doubt, miles and miles and sleepless cold nights, and the help of some great friends. Public land bucks really do exist!Attached FilesLeave a comment:
