    Ground Squirrels!

Who's getting ready for ground squirrels? The roundup is March 19 up in Cedarville. I can't wait. Fourth year attending and my Savages are eager to put the smack down on the critters. Packing 400 rounds of 22-250 for the model 12 FCV and the same amount for the 10FCP-K in 223. Keeping the S&W 617 in 22lr handy for when they sneak up on me (too close for rockets, switching to guns!).

Big Game tree stands rotating shooting bench, Leica range finder, and a Burris 20-60 x 80 spotter for the long shots.

Taking my boy this year for a father-son trip. With the weather the way it's been, they should be up soon if not already.

Worth every hour spent driving up there....

Who else is going, and what's in your kit?

I planning on heading up after the round up. That weekend is a zoo. I haven't had good experiences on the roundup weekend.

Only been once, late April. Hella fun. Took 1000 rounds of 40gr varmint .223, a crapload of .22, and a bunch of 17hmr. It wasn't enough. I'm all loaded up and ready this year, hopefully will have the vacation time and funding to go.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

Think of small rats. I have a friend who has expensive horses, and the dang GS make holes they trip in.

Tastes like a mix between gopher, skunk and racoon. Problem is, by the time you cook all the chit of it, there's nothing left but dust and ash.

Ground squirrels -glorified gophers with long tails= no good
Red/grey tree squirrels- larger body actually have seasons for them= tastey critters

I have a buddy heading up in next few days I'll try and get a report from him.

He is older and likes to shoot them with a bit of snow, works as an idicator. :0

I just shoot the ones in my yard from my patio or living room window with my morning coffee Haven't seen any moving around yet though this year. I put a pretty heavy smackdown on them last spring.

Is it easy to find a ranch ? on the the fliers said that you are responsible to secure a place if you choose to hunt.

Ground squirrels eat their dead?! I didn't know that. Nasty! Thanks for the video. Looked like fun times. I bet the farmer appreciated the assist.

It's pretty easy to get a spot in my experience. The ranchers are glad to have you just don't shoot their water lines (or cattle). Frangible rounds only, no FMJ. I shoot 40gr Varmageddons, VMaxs, or Blitzkings.

I'd take a PM as well with some details.

                              Thanks!
