I've been eyeing a poll tent design but they are heavy. Even getting electrical conduit pipe your looking at 200lbs + based on the sizing. Then the canvas size adds more weight but it can be all worth it if your camping longer stays.

I have the Marine tent and have been using it for about 3 years now for camping in the desert and while deer hunting. It holds the heat in well for the areas I got camping at. Also has stood up pretty well to rain. Last year we had rain on the opener of B Zone and the other guy that was in a tent in our group had water in his huge tent and some of his gear was either soaked or damp. I was fine in my tent. It's easy to put up I am satisfied with the construction. The little storage areas are great for storing stuff but if you are setup near a slope some water will get there. I found a regular tarp for a ground cover that allows me to keep that storage areas drier and not muddy if water gets in there. Little low to get into than a full size tent but I tuck a small folding seat into the storage area and sometimes place a piece of carpet out there. Roll out, sit on folding seat, put boots on. One of the best tents I have owned at this point. For other large trips I went with a quick up from Coleman but only use that when it's me the wife and the dogs and good weather.

A poncho that doubles as a tent. How is that a bad idea?

Me: 1977, BUT I spent many years in the field sleeping in them. When you become an officer, you get BOTH halves! To save wt in my pack, if weather allowed, ditched bag and shelter havles, went to hammock, poncho and poncho liner.
