    marine tent vs army tent

I need some help choosing witch tent to buy. at first the marine tent caught my eye because i liked the way the rain fly creates a kind of porch where you can keep your boots out of the weather. then i saw the army tent and read that the army tent is a four season tent and the marine tent is a three season tent.http://www.diamondbrand.com/manufact...d_brand_tents/ do any of you have experience with either or both of these tents? how well do they with stand wind and water? how do they resist against tearing? thanks.

Usually in the Marine tents, you have to sleep on your stomach

For those nutjobs who like to use the word "gouge"
Note: I did not write the above article.

I have found the "seepage" to be rather high in USMC tents...

The difference between "army" and "marine" is traditionally the oz. weight of the fabric used. "Army" would have been the heavier oz. fabric.

The Marine tent has a mesh top hence the comments about the breathability and three season nature. If you google the other Marine tents e.g. Eureka's TCOP you can see what the top looks like withou the rain fly.

I used the crew tent in sub 20F weather and been OK, the sleep system made up for keeping me warm at night but the inside the tent was pretty chilly, but it's a tent.

I think vestibules are overated. If it's really raining unless you've sloped the tent right your equipment is going to be sitting in water anyway. I do like the Marine tent's fly design as it keeps it off the tent wall. I'd be afraid the Army tent would catch all the condensation and then rain it down in the morning.

I don't think the Army tent is a true 4 season tent in the sense that you can use in mountinous snowy terrain on an expedition, but as a base camp tent it should be find.

Either way, both systems are pretty heavy compared to commerical stuff, in terms of durability, if you're an idiot with the tent it'll still tear and you can break the poles.

I have that Marine tent, it's great. The actual tan fabric of the tent is very thin and you do have to be somewhat careful when you set it up so nothing pokes through (obviously with any tent). The camouflage cover is thicker and strong. Zippers on doors and windows are good just be easy on them. Very easy to setup and take down, stores very conveniently in included bag. Staking is very important as you don't want your corners or rain fly coming loose. As long as you don't bring the moisture in you will stay dry. There is nice storage space where on side I had a few ammo cans and a box of stuff, the other side kept my pack and boots out of the elements. It's pretty short but there is enough room to move around, I've slept in mine with a dog at my feet. I'd have mine for 2-3 years it's still deployed actually I'm about to pack it up and put it into storage for now but I only have a small hole in one of the window screens and some wear and tear on the inside because I stashed ammo boxes and a bunch of stuff in there for the winter and it did get moist due to small punctures in the floor from the metal ammo cans.

A tent that does not have Army or US Marines in the title would probably be better and cheaper. In all my years in the service, I never had the impression that military issue was better than everything out there.

Alpinismo 4 Season Tent with Aluminum Poles

It is very light weight and has a flap outside the door to let your boots and back dry. I just couldn't see spending the money for a tent unless it was a 4 season tent.

I bought one myself and love it. I do lot's of product research before buying things as well. It packs into a fairly small bag, which was a plus. I can actually put this inside my backpack along with my bedroll.

Tents don't actually keep you warm. You need something under you to keep the Earth from sucking out all of your warmth.

I got these with my tent.
Military Modular Sleep System 4 Piece with Goretex Bivy Cover and Carry Sack. I cannot recommend this too strongly, get one! You can remove layers to match the season. It also get's smaller than you would think one you tighten it with compression straps. Does not fit in my pack, it get's strapped to it.

Olive Drab Army Issue Foam Sleeping Pad Mat - 24 x 72 x 3/8, Survival/Camping . Not actually the best possible product, but its small and fits in my pack.

This is better and I have one too. Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest SOLite Sleeping Pad . It is just really big and not good for back packing. What makes it better is the "aluminized Solar coating for 10% boost in warmth with improved durability from surface wear and tear." Basically it reflects some of the body heat back at you.

BTW I am also a sucker for military issue things, but only when it fits my needs the best.

Youd be better off going to your local REI or other outdoor retailer to find a tent. you also left out some important information. HOW will you use this tent? Backpacking? Car Camping? etc

Ive been through tents like the amazon one someone posted(not that exact one, but similar). They suck. As soon as the weather gets windy or rainy youre screwed.

                              .

Not true. A tent will end up being 10-15 degrees warmer inside vs outside air temp. Though you are right about a proper sleeping pad/s.
